Need info on possible health issues for a Basset/Dachshund
A friend and I are currently trying to to adopt out some Basset/Dachshund pups that were the victims of some idiot trying to create the "Basschund" designer breed. The pups were born via c-section at the vet, but ignorant owner couldn't afford the bill so she just released them to the vet. My friend is a vet tech there, so she paid the bill, and is currently fostering them as we try to find homes for them. We have a few homes lined up but....
We really want to educate the new owners on what could possibly come about because of this mixed breed, as in what problems arise in Bassets and Doxies, and which ones are likely to show up even more in a Basset/Doxie mix. We figured back problems, but don't know much about either breed or health issues, so we really don't have a clue what's more likely to show up when the two are bred. Obviously we don't know the pups parentage, we're just looking for general health problems that could show up, as we plan to write up a short care sheet for the pups before adopting them out. Thanks |

Possibly back problems like you stated. Sometimes we see bassets and doxies with deformed/splayed front legs but this is not as common as back issues. Also skin allergies and ear issues come to mind.

I'm not a scenthound person, but of course back problems are prevalent in both breeds. New owners should definitely be on the look-out for any disc problems, arthritis and hip problems, luxating patellas (I think patella problems are pretty big in these breeds), and *definitely* be on the watch for OBESITY!!! Obesity is very big with both breeds, so the new owners should be dedicated to vigilantly supervising their dog's diet and exercise. Since either breed could be predominant, I'd be wary of eye problems and ear infections, both of which are big Basset maladies. Since Dachsies are drop-eared as well, I'd advise future owners to clean and pluck the ears weekly or else they can and probably will develop nasty ear infections.
Poor puppies. Another unwanted litter bred by money hungry idiots I hope you find fantastic homes for these puppies and strike up a speuter contract! |
