Here are the pictures. The one that is laying down is the one I'm probally going to adopt. Depends on what they act like when I get them. coonhounds are wonderful dogs but you NEED TO BE AWARE of what they are like.
first, they bark. bark, bay, howl, you name it. coonhounds are loud dogs. secondly, they have a high prey drive - they will chase just about anything, and because of that, can't be trusted off leash. it can also be problematic in the house. third - they are independent and used to working on their own- they can be stubborn and "hard to train" because their original function doens't involve a lot of direction from people - its something they know how to do. that being said, not all coonhounds are like that - but the large majority are, making them difficult to adopt out at times, and a high rate of return in shelters, rescues - making screening important. life with them can be lovely - but you need to understand what they are like! =kim (lived with a coonhound for years) |

I owned a black and tan coonhound. She was very stubborn and definetly had a mind of her own! She also howled and bayed, sounded like a wounded elephant! She was hard to potty train and took almost 8 months before she could be trusted in the house. She was the most destructive puppy I ever owned. She ate everything from my entire couch, the living room curtains, and a garden hose was her favorite snack. I had to replace the carpet in the dining room twice. Oh but she was smart and loving and loyal and protective. She learned her basic commands after being shown only once. She was perfect on her commands and listened and watched me perfectly. She was so great with little kids and they could crawl on her and poke and pinch her and she loved it. She was so gentle with other animals and she fell in love with our kitten at the time and would carry her around in her mouth. She turned out to be a wonderful dog. You just have to get through the first two years and not have any close neighbors. I will definetly own another coon hound. I loved that dog so much! I definetly learned the meaning of patience with this dog and she tested it almost to the end more than once. I found that with dogs like her I have an endless amount of it!

Wow, good luck. Trying to raise one was a handful. My only advise, something I learned the hard way is DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THEM FOR A SECOND!! Have lots and lots of chew toys and work on the basic obedience right away. The reason I got my mini black and tan dachshund is that she reminds me so much of my coonhound but tiny. I really will get another one someday. They are wonderful dogs but need lots of care and patience. I had to give my baby to my uncle because her howling drove my neighbors nuts and I couldn't stop her from doing it. I tried keeping her in the garage when I went to work but the noise would bounce off the walls and metal door and amplify. My Uncle owned a farm and she had all the space to run and howl to her hearst delight. She was much happier there.

Oh Im sorry to hear that
Dont count on email ALWAYS call. But just for the record, coonhounds ARE very stubborn. I agree with what was said above. We had an english coonhound who my hubby didnt get to work with much and she was just TOTALLY unmanageable. We ended up giving her to someone else who could spend lots of time with her. She was a beautiful dog, but SO SO busy!!! |
