I'd go with what your vet says.. As far as I know, dogs with missing toes get around just fine and it's much better than letting the infection spread.

I bet that dog will do just fine. Dogs don't dwell on losing limbs, toes, whatever. They accept it and move on. Just listen to your vet

my dog lost his toe a few weeks ago. Our vet gave him bacteria medicine and peroxide. Try some peroxide and bactine.

We had to have a toe amputated on our hunting dog many years ago. He jumped into the back of the truck and we accidently closed his toes in the tail gate hinge. It crushed the bone and pulled off his nail. We tried to save it and let him heal and we took him to the vet every week for two months to have it cleaned and looked at. He wouldn't walk on this foot despite our efforts to keep it clean and bandaged. The vet asked us to do the surgery and we finally did. Once the surgery was over he healed in a week and was running around like his old self. I wish we hadn't waited so long.
Don't worry about it too much, your dog will be fine and will heal fast if it has to be done. Our dog ran around like it never happened.
