Needing some help.
Hey there, been a while.
We are doing fairly well, Biscuit is an awsome dog, and has been so much fun over the last almost year. We've been very successful in house breaking him, and training him to come to us and stay and are working on shake a paw. The kids wanted that one. Anyway we are having a problem with Biscuit and strangers. He loves us, me my husband and 4 children, and one cat, and gets along well with extended family and friends and other animals that he knows well, BUT does not seem to like strange people that he hasn't met. He barks, and if they come near him and offer their hand for him to sniff, he will bite or make a loud growl and try to bite. I think I posted about this already and we have tried to have strangers give him a treat but that isn't going so well, he will take the treat but will continue to bark and almost choke on his treat. So I'm thinking that's not such a safe solution. Please any help would be great. I was thinking maybe some sort of behaviour training might be necessary but don't know what I should look for in a trainer, what types of methods would be helpful and what would just make the situation worse? |

Get biscuit into a positive reinforcement training class asap!!!!! He is too young to be biting people.
Iknow he is small, but make sure when people approach him they don't tower over him, hover over him, or lean over him. Make sure they turn sideways and squat, rather than lean over to give him a treat. Also make sure they don't extend their hand until he gets a chance to settle down a bit. Let him go over an sniff them from like a foot or two away and have them just ignore him and keep talking to you. No look, no touch, no talking from them. But you really need to get him socialized with new people and animals so getting him in a good class would be the first step. |
