Podengos anyone?
I haven't changed my info yet...this is all so new....
I was wondering if anyone here has a podengo or a friend with a podengo? Our Jackie was adopted a year ago and listed as a Jack Russell/STD. Poodle cross by the rescue. As she matured, certain things didn't fit either breed or even seem to be a middle ground. But, then, we had nothing else to go on. I recently discovered Podengos by accident and was shocked. The wirehaired pequeno variety was like a clone of my girl (except Jackie's ears aren't "quite" as perky). We did some research with the rescue we got her from and had her examined by a few breeders. Yup. She's a podengo. And all this time we thought she was a terrier mutt...not a purebred hound. |

I saw them originally in Portugal a few years back and now we have quite a few in the UK. Very cute although they do look like cross breeds.

I've never met a Podengo, but they're fantastic looking dogs. I was reading about them just recently actually. Have you posted pictures of your dog yet (I probably missed them)? If not, I'd love to see her. Cass. |

That's a pretty amazing story, since there are only 130 purebred podengos in the US (according to the podengo club's web site). The odds of stumbling across one in a shelter....and a puppy no less...must be astonishing. Were any of the breeders you talked to able to suggest a bloodline based on appearance and your location? I'm sure the original breeder would want to know that one of their pups ended up in a shelter.
Would love to see pics. |

That's really amazing! You've found a diamond in the rough.
You must have travelled quite a bit to get breeders to look at your pup- there are only 13 breeders recognized by the Podengo club in the US. Good for you for being so dedicated! |

Here she is. Yes, she was just scolded (for digging under the fence). Her ears aren't quite right anyway...creased from an inexplicable "pasting" but the size, shape, and location are right and they still try to stand up (at about half-mast).
![]() There was a line suggestion based on her coat and markings, but there was also some debate on whether she was from outside the club...maybe from Portugal. *edited to add* I seem to be on a roll finding dogs that I shouldn't. Our KBT was found "free to good home"...lets just say the breeder and breed club were a little shocked about her whole story (yet pleased about the good new home). |

She's adorable! From the little bit I've read about Podengos in the last bit, their breed standard looks like lots of little mixes could fit it quite nicely. Also, wiry-haired mixes that size are a dime a dozen. If every dog that fit that description was a Podengo, man, my shelter is full of exotic, rare purebreds!
![]() Regardless of what she is or isn't, I'm sure she's got a wonderful home. Good for you for taking her in! |

I know. We saw a bunch when we've purused PetFinder.
Originally I contacted the podengo club president (the contact number they gave...small club!) asking if she might just have a little in her mix. I like to know what my dogs are for health reasons and so I can keep my eye out for problems. Even with mutts, it's helpful. We were told they find a lot of portuguese hunting dogs in the same place (podengo mixed with other hound by immigrating population) when we were just talking over the phone. Upon seeing her, the mix idea seemed to go away. If she's pure, that's great. It just means she's healthier and I have pretty much nothing to watch out for! Also, maybe do feild trials. It's the only thing I can see competing with her in. Flyball was a wash. |

it's a rare primitive breed of hound.
Really, though, they pretty much just look like a scruffy mutt--A cute scruffy mutt. Go to www.podengos.com and you'll see loads. |

The smooth haired version don't look like mutts (at least not to me) and the medio and grande sizes are stunning (not that the pequeno is adorable too
). It's funny, when you see them individually you can be forgiven for thinking they're terrier mixes but as a group they are undoubtedly a breed. -ok, perhaps that made more sense in my head than it did typed out - Cass. |

Oh, how cute!
I like the smooth haired better than the wirehaired though, but then, that is just me too. They sound like really neat dogs! |
