I have a 14 week old dachshund and I am not sure if he is a mini or a standard. My vet said he was very small but the person I purchased him from said they thought he was standard. He weighs a little over 3 pounds and is still very young. Does anyone know how I could distinguish him or will I have to wait to see how big he will get when he is full grown?

His parents size will determine his size.
From your description I'm assuming you bought him at a pet store or other unreputable and unethical person, so, you may just have to wait and see. That's the breaks when you buy a puppy like that. Good Luck in the future. |

Yup! I'm afraid the only real way to tell is to see his parents or siblings from another litter.
Mini or not , your puppy is just to cute...what a little face. Make sure you post more pics, please!!! |

I agree, whatever the parents were will determine the size of your puppy.
roman - I have to agree with shadow. It DOES in fact look like a cavy, but there are long haired doxies, and being as small as he is makes him seem even less doxie-like. I'd LOVE to see more pictures too! ![]() |

The dog in the avatar definitely looks like a long haired dachsie - maybe a bit short in the nose, but still a dachsie. I owned one once... for about three weeks. LOL.
Even if you knew the parents, there is a chance that the pup could be something other. Ie. If the parents are standards, the pup could be a mini, and vice versa. I have a friend who breeds mini-longs, and one of her boys from her definitely mini litter is very definitely a standard. Only time will tell for your little one. |

My dachshund Bailey was 3 pounds at 10 weeks old and she is now full grown at 12 pounds and perfect weight for her size. She is over the weight limit for a mini but under the weight limit for a standard so I guess she is a tweeny. My other dachshund, Lucy, was less than 2 pounds at 10 weeks and is full grown at 7 pounds. Harley was less than 2 pounds at 10 weeks and was as tiny as could be but she is full grown at 10 pounds. You won't really know what the end weight will be until around 11 months but I would say your pup is a minature or in between. He is sure a cutey pie.

In Canada, only mini's can be bred to mini's and only standards to standards. Smooths can only be bred to smooths, wire to wire, long haired to long haired. So, in my friend's case, he HAD to be registered as a mini-long haired, but could not be shown once he went oversized in the mini category. I don't think it's the same in the US. It might be, but I'm not sure.

Well, this pup was my first pet purchase. He was for my daughter who just turned 2. When I bought him I was naive in taking the pet stores word when they said he had papers and they would send them to me in 4 weeks (awaiting the breeder to send them to the store) Also she said that her husband saw the parents and they were standard long hairs. I let the four weeks go by and the pet store was shut down. It was either a coinsidence or I got had! But we love him regardless! Oh, is snout and ears have definately took off in size so he's looking more like a doxie. I really need to update his pic...but this one is just too cute. So it could be possible for him to be just in between an mini and standard? I have definately learned my lesson and will never do business with a pet store again. Right now he looks just like Barrett's doxie Bailey but with wavy ears the rest of his coat is still smooth. Thanks for all your comments it helped a lot!
