Three gorgeous greys headed for homes!

A week ago I went to pick up three very special hounds: Joy & Princess (who are littermates) and Ms. Dodge. All racers in Mobile that were owned by a friend of mine who had arranged for them to be adopted out through a group in NC.

What WONDERFUL hounds all these girls were! So incredibly sweet....just the perfect little greyhounds. And, as an interesting (to me, anyway) sidenote - Ken and I were a hair's breadth away from buying Joy as our first race dog...we were almost her forever family, but since we weren't I'm glad I had the chance to meet this beauty in person and spend some time with her. They stayed with us for a week and today I drove them to NC to their new foster moms.

They were the best dogs I've ever moved from the track....they laid down and slept the entire trip of 7 hours! Joy in in the back, Dodge in the middle and Princess up front...

Ms. Dodge has the most beautiful black tip markings

They got a real kick out of doing yard zoomies....here they are launching themselves from the kennel building for their first lap of the day

Yard zoomies done, they prepare for landing

The little black girl is a hound that we board pretty regularly and was here last week - Darby. I just LOVE her!

If you make more than 2 seconds of eye contact with Princess you get a HUG from her! My girl Scouty gives me hugs every day, so with her in the hospital it made my heart smile to have Princess there to keep me on my toes....

Joy and Princess: "Ok Kennelmom...you trimmed our nails and made us get clean, are we ready to go yet????"

Joy on the way to the adoption group today

And one last shot of the sisters, Joy and Princess

My best wishes to each of them in finding a forever home...from what I understand, two of them may already be spoken for!

Aww! They are so gorgeous! There's a grey being boarded at my work. His name is Cody. He's so sweet... a bit older I believe seeing that he has a tiny bit trouble getting up and his back legs woble when he does. But he's such a nice dog. Always so happy and LOVES to be petted. Loves to have his butt scratched. A tiny bit on the skinny side for me. I know greys are skinny to begin with, but I think he could use a tad bit more weight.

I hope they all find their forever homes! I'm sure they'll make someone very happy!

I find greys are just the most stunning dogs, so elegant in their movements. Glad to see these girls are getting good homes.

Beautiful dogs!

I have a question.....I know they wear muzzles while racing for safety reasons, but why on a general basis?

Okay, I'm a complete noobie when it comes to greyhounds. I'm sure there's a reason for the face masks/muzzles and I'm sure the dogs are used to them.

But could you please explain? Thanks.

That was going to be my question as well.........why the muzzle?

They are such regal looking dogs, and from my understanding, they all have such wonderful personalities, and become such a great addition to any family beings they love to lay on the sofa too.

I believe the muzzles are just for safety reasons. I don't think it would be very nice to have three dogs in the back get into a scuffle while your driving I know for a fact it's not for negative reasons. It keeps the dogs safe from injury if a squabble breaks out. That's all I know, though.

I actually found out today that the grey at work, their owners own the Palm Beach Kennel Club (the dog track). Cool!

Excellent explanation for the muzzles, IcyBlueSibes!! They are for saftey reasons. A greyhound's skin can be pretty fragile. Even an accidental nip that wouldn't leave a mark on another breed can be a nasty tear on a greyhound. So, whenever you run greys or turn them out together (especially if they don't belong to you) it's always best to muzzle them.

They don't mind the muzzles and actually associate them with great things like getting to hang out with their buds or go running. They can drink and even eat through them...heck, they'll pick up stuffies and run around with them.

Very cool! PBKC is a very nice track.

I usually tell people that when their grey looks like it's a tad too skinny, it's probably at exactly the right weight You should be able to see the last couple ribs and usually the tips of the hip pointers (depends on the overall build though). We keep our seniors a bit on the heavy side simply because if they get sick, they can take longer to recover than a younger hound and I like to have some wiggle room in their weight

Trouble with his hind end may be lumbosacral stenosis (more common in German Shepards, but does occur in greyhounds). One of our old guys has this...he's wobbly in his hind end and his back toes will knuckle under/drag. He gets a shot every couple months that relieves the pain.

I guess it's just because I'm not used to seeing greys. I remember reading that it's common to see their ribs. Is it also common to see a couple/few vetebra in the middle of their back? He has three that stick up, and the hair stands up on that part too. LOL

Thanks for that info. He walks pretty well most of the time, but get him on a slippery floor, or if he turns just slightly the wrong way, he's slipping all over the place. He can't hike his leg very long to pee. That's usually when you can see the most wobbling.

He doesn't get turned loose with the other dogs, simply because of his hips I think and he seems like a very sensitive guy. I accidently poked him in the eye (wasn't very hard though) the other day, and the poor thing yipped like I chopped his toe off. Poor guy.. I felt so bad! But he has a spaniel mix there with him that is his buddy.

He gets special priveleges during the day. Since the arenas are being used, he lays in the back (usually by the feeding area) and just lounges on the bed all day. He lets us know when he needs to go out... he'll poke his head around the corner, and just start wagging his tail. Then he'll trot right over and lean his face into you like "Don't you just looooove me!" LOL
