My poor Scout - or - why greys wear muzzles (graphic pic warning)

The Sunday before last, I made a trip to Mobile to pick up some very special hounds headed to a group in NC. So hubby had our pups all to himself....We recently made some changes to their routine (and routine is a LOT in this house!). We switched from feeding them in the garage to feeding them in the kennel which sits all the way at the back of our property. We also switched from feeding them in two shifts (seniors first, then the young un's) to feeding them all at once. We usually tag team meals so one can be outside and one can be inside...Our rule is to never leave the hounds unattended outside without muzzles.

After a long day of driving I'm about two hours from home when I get a call from Ken (hubby) telling me that there'd been a fight and that Scout was hurt. He'd fed them dinner and turned everyone out when he went back in the kennel for just a minute to finish picking up bowls and let the cats back out of the cat room. When he came back out, the fight was over but Scouty was pretty badly hurt. She was standing on her own and walking around but she needed to get to the vet ASAP. So he headed to the vet with Scout and I had a nerve wracking, tearful, prayer-filled two hours back to Greenville.

She finally came home from the vet last Friday.....She has a lot of superficial wounds and a pretty serious one on her side that they can't keep closed with staples. Due to the sheer number of nicks, tears, scrapes and other open wounds they vet was primarily concerned with infection - which he feels we have pretty safely avoided at this point but was the reason for the long hospital stay. The other concern is a bite under her armpit that may have damaged some of the nerves there. Right now she walks fine on the leg but we won't know for sure for a couple weeks if that foot will start knuckling under. We are keeping our fingers crossed b/c it looks really good at this point. From examining the other dogs and what Ken saw when he came outside, we determined that this fight did not involve the whole pack...just a few of the dogs. Something that got out of control quickly and then quickly ended.

We both know that this never would have happened if he had been in the yard with the hounds. But without him or I there...things can spiral out of control in a flash.

If you want to see pics of what JUST a minute can do with unmuzzled greyhounds (and what takes $3000 to put back together again) scroll........

Scout is recouperating in the kennel where it's quiet and she can rest. She won't rejoin the pack until her injuries have fully healed.

Her left side.....

Her right front leg....

My poor baby...you can see the open wound that popped back open after they stapled it....Their skin is so thin that often times staples and stitches just won't hold it back together. We're doing water therapy on the wounds that can't be closed.

The good news is that she's eating well, wagging her tail and her mobility is much better in just a few days!

Prayers for my Scouty's full recovery always welcome

Scary.

Dumb question... Do retired racing greys need to be muzzled for the rest of their lives?

It really depends on the dog and the situation. When we take our young crew to run on 5-6 acres they are always muzzled. We have pretty competitive bunch and unless they have something to focus on when running (i.e. chasing a lure) they will tend to turn their head and give some competitive nips. And running anywhere from 25-30+ mph, there can be some accidental contact as well. Muzzles prevent any damage. Kinda like riding a bike with a helmet...muzzles are safety equipment.

In our yard, after what happened to Scout, most of them are muzzled. Our seniors aren't. Of course, we are dealing with a large number of greys (14) so our situation is kinda special.

When I only had my two greys, they were only muzzled when we went to greyhound playgroup - muzzles are usually required at playgroup b/c you have anywhere from 10-15 greys running together.

I do not muzzle my dogs if they are turned out with other breeds.

It is important to point out that greyhounds are not aggressive...they are probably less aggressive than any other breed out there. But if they get into a fight, the greyhound is going to sustain much more damage than another breed would.

Poor girl! Those look like they hurt!! Luckily, I never have any problems at all with my pack, fighting wise. I get growls, and lunges..but they never actually bite each other.

I wish her a fast recovery!

I was expecting to see a picture of a CAT when I scrolled down. I just assumed one Scout was one of your kitties who had accidentally got too near greyhounds in chase prey mode.
They are an interesting breed- how they can go from couch potatoes in the house to lightening fast running and how they can seem like the gentlest creatures in the world but will bite and nip to the point of inflicting serious wounds. I didn't know that greyhounds that know each other / live together would bite each other that way. What types of situations set this off ? Is it always when they are competing for or chasing "prey" that these sorts of bites happen ? Does running get them in this mode the way seeing livestock gets a herding dog in herding mode?
