My precious Casino has osteo

She's been limping...we thought it was the three corns on her foot. We had them hulled out by the vet last week. The limping didn't get better...it got worse. An xray today confirmed the diagnosis..she has osteosarcoma in her shoulder.

My heart is just broken...I feel so helpless that there is nothing we can do except try to keep the pain at bay. We will lavish her with treats and love and everything we can for the next few days and help her to the Bridge on Thursday.

She came to us only 5 short months ago at the age of 12 and was supposed to have at least couple good years living the retired, pampered life of a pet after giving so much of her life to others. She retired from racing, then whelped a couple litters, then continued to give life to others as a blood donor at a vet clinic. A truly amazing hound with an amazing spirit. I just can not imagine her not being here.

I freaking hate osteo

A few pics of my beautiful girl...

With her daddy and Elvis (who came from the same vet clinic)

Her favorite place to sleep...in front of my closet!

I'm soooo sorry to hear that kennelmom. What a terrible thing to have happen. Atleast she was able to spend her last 5 months in the most wonderful home she could possibly get. She was blessed to find you... she'll forever be your guardian angel.

Is this one of the two that you adopted out from the vet clinic?

That stinks.
One of my good friends just euthanised her soul dog for osteo in her leg. She was able to live pretty well for 6 months after diagnosis and only limped periodically.
It's been a really bad run lately for dogs needing to be PTS. In my very small circle there have been 3 since Christmas.

So sad.

((big hugs))

Oh Heather. I'm so sorry to hear this. It just doesn't seem fair that Casino gave and gave of herself and then spent only 5 months getting love and attention back in full. Thank God for those 5 months, though.

My thoughts and prayers are with you guys. Give Casino a hug and a kiss for me if she likes those.

That's terrible news - I'm so sorry for you but as others have said at least Casino had 5 brilliant months with you.

Is osteo more common in greyhounds than other breeds?

It seems like a few GP members are going through tough situations at the moment. I am really sorry to hear that Casino has Osteo.. She looks like such a precious girl, and is very lucky to have great owners like you and your partner.

Thanks everyone...Cas seems to be enjoying her time and extra special treats. We brought her home a couple pieces of sushi last night from dinner (special ordered for her!) and she loved them!

I don't know if it's more common than other breeds, but it does seem to be the one horrible disease that takes more greyhounds than any other (that I'm aware of). I have been so fortunate that this is my first experience with the disease in one of my own hounds. My other two Bridge babies (greyhounds) died of old age.
