Question Looking for a good breeder of Labs in NM.

One of my coworkers has asked me to help her find a Lab (any color) puppy from a reputable breeder. She and her family are going to start looking at the end of this month.

Do you dog folks already know a good breeder here in NM?

Where should we start looking?

I found a good article at Petconnection.com about reputable breeders vs. backyard breeders. It had great information.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!

Bridgett

Here is the list of breeders for the national breed club, I think you can find some here
http://www.thelabradorclub.com/breed...ry_bystate.php

These ones in NM have websites
www.newmexicankennels.com
enchantedpinekennels.com
www.killingworthlabs.com

I agree, the Labrador Retriever Club would be a great start. Also, be sure to remind your friend that she probably would also try looking in neighboring states as well. You and your friend can type in Labrador Retriever Breeders !! There are allot of Labrador Breeders around, just be sure to make a check list of what you'll be needing to know. Hips, Eyes, Elbows, Heart, Opt. Testing, Pedigree's(a good Lab breeder should know what's behind their dogs, and not just the titles !). When you look on websites, be sure to note what they state. Do they talk about why they breed ? What are their goals ? How do they handle the Reg. on "Pet" puppies ? Do they have a Puppy Adoption Application ? Do they have their puppies under a 25months Hip Guarantee ? How about a 1yr Guarantee for Eye's ? How many litters do they have a Year ? Stay away from breeders who claim to breed any "rare" color or size Lab. Now look at their Dogs and Bitches, are they all health tested ? Do they compete in any thing, like Obedience, Conformation, etc ? Just make a good list, and ask questions. Another site to check out is this one http://wiscoy.com/kennellinks.html . It's a long list, but some very good breeders are listed on their. Enchated Pine Kennels checks out well, they not only show their labs, they also do Retrieveing skills as well. To me, that is important ! Killingworth Labs is also a very good breeder , very dedicated !! Good Luck !!!

Thanks all for your help. I sent her the list from the labrador club. I also sent her the address for a lab rescue here in NM.

I will let you all know what happens. She doesn't seem to be to enthused with the information I have given her. Why pay $500 or so for a dog from a breeder when you can get one out of the newspaper for $250. Ugh! I hate that mentality. That is why I gave her the rescue address.

Anyways, I will let you all know what happens.

Giving her the Rescue's address was a great idea. Why pay $250 to a ByB'er when you can spend around the same and save a life in need ! There are allot of really good Labs in rescue's, some are puppies. Just tell her to think, getting a puppy/older pup from a rescue would eliminate the hassle of getting the pup spay/neutered , and the puppy would have already have had a vet exam, shots, worming - and many are already potty trained !! Oh, also have her look on Pet Finder !!!!!!

Lmao briarlow, that's exactly what I was thinking.

I agree with rescue. Look around, theres lot of labs available. And then you can get one fully trained already. Or you could get a puppy. There are so many dogs available, you'll have no trouble finding a lab that needs saved.
