Basset hound ears

I am always the one to give my hounds a bath & with both of them I always pay special attention to their ears. Bisquit is 4, Buddy is 5. While Bisquit was sitting on my lap, I was rubbing her ears & noticed that on both ears is a split on the back of them. Buddy too. I have never read or seen this anywhere about the dogs. I'm assuming this is a scent thing about the dogs. Has anyone heard of this ?

He's very cute ! He looks like he has the body & eyes of a basset hound. My Bisqiut has to go on another diet. (54 lbs). I think it's just winter fat, she's stout & still eats about the same. I hate to keep switching food on them. Buddy says - great, your fat & I have to go on a diet ! HA! He weighs 40, & is a different type of basset.
