Doxies: peeing on bedding?
My 3 1/2 month old Doxie, Winston, constantly pees on his bedding! The blankets we put in his kennel he will drag out of the kennel, play with them and then pee on them...we have 2 dog beds and no sooner do I wash them then he pees on them, even if we just came in from outside! Any ideas on what to do that could help or how long he might take to grow out of it?
I'm half considering trying to train him to both pee-pad and outdoor train him since winters in ND are brutal and I don't think either of us wants to stand outside in a blizzard for him to do his business. Is there any successfull way to do both? Do you train both ways at the same time or one at a time? Thanks in advance! Heather |

First, it would be a good idea to wash the blankets in an enzyme cleaner or put it in the rinse water. Ordinary washing doesn't remove the urine smell completely. To prevent him from dragging the blankets out of his kennel, you could remove them during the day and put them in the crate only at night, or you could limit the puppy's access to the crate.
I would advise against trying to train to pad and outdoors. It will only frustrate you and the puppy. It's best to choose one or the other. Kit |

Dozer use to go in his kennel as well as the others and pee, he's 3 years old. I started shutting the kennel doors and no one gets in unless I say so lol.... I too would pick either to train outdoors or inside, if you want inside why not just litter train them. Personally I prefer to train outside then they know to mess outdoors not indoors...

When both of my dachshunds were babies they would pee on any small rug or door mat. I don't know why but they both did this as pups. I had to pick up all the rugs for a few months, including the bath mat. After a few months I put the rugs down one at a time and kept an eye on my pups. They stopped doing it. I would take the blankets out of your pups crate and bed for a while. Buy a crate mat that is waterproof and easy to clean. In a few months try introducing one blanket back and see how your pup does.
It might be a dachshund thing! LOL I would not suggest that you train your pup to use pee pads and going outside at the same time. Choose one or the other. If you started training him to go outside, keep doing that. Switching half way through will confuse him. In the winter time put a fluffy jacket on him if he doesn't want to pee outside. That works for my sister's poodle. |

I lived in ND for 6 years and boy do I ever know what those winters are like. It's horrible!! I have a Yorkie who uses the wee-wee pad and also pees and poops outside. It works beautifully! I did not train her to both. I put the wee-wee pad down and she just automatically took to it, but that's when she was in a very small fenced area in the house, with her crate and all. Anyway I never found it to be fun taking a dog out at night or early morning when traveling and in a motel/hotel a few floors up or raining outside, so decided the next dog would be pad trained. I can't tell you how wonderful that has been for us. Zada is now 6 months 1 week and still does not have run of the house except for about 1/2 hr. at a time when we play and watch her every second. We gate the sunroom where she has her bed, toys, pad and food. It's a 12x30 so a nice size for her and room to exercise. We also let her in the back yard several times a day to run and play. Her time with run of the house will increase a little at a time. There is no hurry, and by the time she's about a year old she may not have to have a gate up, and if there are accidents, then we go for a refresher course again.
Anyway this is what we have decided works best for all of us. |

My friends just got a puppy doxie and it went to the bathroom on the door mats too. I would agree with the liter training if you are going to train inside, it might not be as portible as the puppy pads, but it seems more hygenic to me. I would guess that if your dog is kind of digging in the blankets before peeing that it would pick up the liter box pretty quick, and being a doxie it might enjoy the ability to dig a little.
I would stick with one training method too. Trying to teach both could lead to confusion and more accidents. I understand the cold weather thing, this winter was horrible because I would get woken up early to take them out so I would have to bundle up, wait for them, and then try to fall back asleep. Usually this ended up with me in little more then a t-shirt, shorts and sandles freezing my butt off as they took their sweet time. |
