My new beagle.

Hi all.

This is my first post here on the forums. So, how are you all doing?

Any-how, this is my first Beagle, I have always wanted one. I do some hunting and cant wate to see how he does in the woods. But, most of all I have a 5 year old daughter and she really like them too. I wanted a dog that likes to swim and play ball, loves car rides and jumps on you when you get home. From what I have read, Beagles seem like a big dog, in a small package. He will get plenty of play and run time in my house, I can not wate till he is a little bigger and ready for action. He is only 7 weeks old now, so im giving him plenty of rest, I know the time will come when he is ready for play. I know I could have got other dogs to fit my profile, but, the Beagle just seemed right.

Here are some pictures of him. I have only had him for three days.

Dave.

Oh my goodness he is sooo cute! I love the picture of him wrapped up in the towel. My nephew has a beagle and he is wonderful. His name is Buster and I love the way he barks and bays. What is your little guy's name?

Hi guys.

His name is Bentley.

I was kind of looking for the more "common" looking Beagle. But, when I started seeing Beagles with Bentley's type of color pattern, I really started to like them.

Can you guys tell me what is the differance, if any, between a Beagle that looks like this one.....

or

....and the one like my color pattern?

Thanks.
Dave.

Oh my gosh, how cute is your puppy! Oh, and welcome BTW.

I don't think there is any difference in the Beagles you posted aside from the coloring, and that doesn't matter when it comes to temperament. Beagles are Beagles are Beagles, no matter what their coloring is.

Ritz is right, it's just a different colour. It's down to breeding, and what ever dogs Bentley's breeder used in their line.
He's a cutie, by the way.

Cass.

Yeah, I love the dog. He is great! My daughter will not put him down, I think she thinks he is a toy, but, I keep an eye on her.

I hope he gets 22-25 pounds. His mom was about 17 or 18 pounds and his dad was over 20, maybe 23 pounds or so. What do you guys think, what is the normall size for a male Beagle, is that a realsitce size?

Here are some great sites all about beagles for you to check out and learn more about the breed.

Beagles on the web
Beagles rrrrrrrrrrr Us

According to the standard there are two sizes, one is no taller than 13 inches and the other is over 13 inches but not taller than 15. Of course, in reality you are going to get ones that are taller and shorter.
As for weight, I'm not sure. He might be the same weight as his dad or perhaps somewhere in between both parents. I don't think you can accurately predict that. Just so long as he's in proportion to his height (if ya catch my meaning). Beagles are prone to obesity. So make sure he gets plenty of exercise and good food, to stop him from getting fat.

For you guys/gals that have been around little Beagles and know what they look like, how does he look for his age? Is he about on for 7 weeks old?

Here's a link to a beagle breeder's website with pictures of a puppy growing up. It goes from 1 day old all the way through to 10 weeks of age.
http://www.einsteinbeagles.com/boy1puppics.htm

If you click the 'NEXT' button at the bottom of that page it will take you to the next litter mate and you can watch them grow up as well. It's quite good.

Dang! My pup looks small for his age. I hope he dont turn out tiny. Thouse dogs look a little bigger then he is at 8weeks. Could this mean he will turn out small?

Okay, I got his measurements. He is 5 pounds and is 6 1/2 inches from the ground to his sholder(thats his front leg). Does that sound right for a 7-8 week old Beagle pup?

Any info?

Found another site you might be interested in. It belongs to a beagle breeder who breeds working beagles and has a page about training a pup (should post it in the other thread you have but I'm lazy tonight so forgive me ).
http://www.milleroutdoors.com/articl...beagle-pup.htm

I have no idea if what your pup weighs now is typical of the breed at that age. The best thing to do, if you're worried about it, is to contact the breeder and ask. Or ask your vet when your pup goes in for vaccinations or a check up (even if you just call them rather than go in, you might find out some info).

Your pup could very well turn out to be less than 20lbs (which is apparently typical of the smaller of two beagle sizes) or he could turn out to be just as big or even bigger than his dad. You'll have to wait and see. Don't be too upset if he's on the smaller side, it doens't mean he won't make a good hunting dog. He could be great. As long as you work with him he's sure to at least make a great pet.

Cass.
