I know each dog is different, but in general, How is their temperament? Do they get along with other dogs? Kids? How active are they? DO they have any special quirks we should look out for?

I find them a little distant with strangers, but tolerant of activity around them. Unlike my curious Greyhounds, however, tolerance doesn't always equate to interest. Personally, I'm put off by the fact that the breed seems uninterested in strangers, unlike my almost Lab-like (by comparison) Greys. Though I understand that their personalities with their owners is much different than with strangers, I can't say I really admire the breed all that much. Among the sighthounds, I rate them behind the Greyhound, Whippet, Deerhound and Wolfhound in desirability as a pet based on temperament. |

I agree with Jcsperson. Salukis are still quite "primitive" in terms of temperament. They aren't necessarily lovey-dovey, but they hold deep respect for their owner and caretaker. They're quite aloof with strangers, but generally are not watch dog material, although, like you mentioned, it does vary from dog to dog. Think of Salukis like you would of a cat. It takes firm, gentle loving to earn their respect, but once you have it, their love for you runs true and deep. I'm not sure how they tolerate other dogs, so I can't help you there. With kids, I always say, If the child are respectful of the dog, the dog is respectful of the child. Salukis are not like Labs or Goldens where they show their affection towards children by licking and clambering over them for a scratch on the head. Instead, Salukis enjoy calm, respectful older children. They enjoy being petted, but they don't wish to be hovered over. In terms of activeness, I've always been told that Salukis are more active than Greyhounds. I've been told their energy level is similar to that of a Pharoah, which, by the way, is quite high. They need a nice, fenced area to romp in and daily jogs/walks. As for special quirks, I don't share my home with one, so I'll let Willowmum answer that one.

Generally Ive found salukis more outgoing and friendly than greyhounds but each dog should be taken on its own merits. Agree with greenleaf in most of what she says. Their recall is not always the best as with most sighthounds and they do have more energy than greys. From what Ive observed most saluki get on fine with other dogs and kids, however they can be rather bouncy and mouthy when young but then that can be said about most dogs.
A really good website where there's lots of saluki owners is http://s3.invisionfree.com/Salukis_and_Co get on there and you'll get all the answers you want. I maybe a fool according to some but these people really know thier saluki's. |
