Hello! This is my first time posting. The problem I am having here is that my beagle seems to be really tiny. Everyone who sees her says that. I was wondering if that was something I should be concerned about. She has really runny poo as well which I will be making a vet app. monday for. Today while I had her out a woman stopped and said that her daughter had a beagle and it died two days later from internal bleeding. So right now I am just all kinds of worried and not sure what to do. If anyone has pictures of their beagles at around 8 weeks and could share those that would be great so I can kinda compare sizes and just see how small my little Cody is. Thanks a bunch in advance

How much does Cody weight? Is she a 13 inch or 15 inch beagle? Lucy was about 4 or 5 lbs at 9 weeks when we first got her. She is a 13 inch beagle. As puppies there is a HUGE difference in size between the two breeds. When we picked Lucy out we compared pups of the same age but from the two size categories and decided on the smaller of the two. If you look under my ID in the photo's section there are some pictures of Lucy when she was little - that may help (I'll check to make sure that there are some good ones of her!). She grew REALLY quickly and now at 4 mo. she is 11.5 lbs. Definately take her to the vet about the runny poo - is she vomiting also? Does she eat? Is she skinny or just small? Hope this helps. |

Some dogs tend to be smaller than the breed standard. My one Black Lab that I trained for Leader dog is so small it's amazing but she was fine and had no problems.
It's wise that you are taking your dog to the vet, better safe than sorry. However, dogs sometimes have loose stools when they get really worried or something else is wrong, or sometimes it just comes and goes for no reason. How long has your dogs stool been more loose than usual? Because if it's just been a day or something I wouldn't be to concered. Try feeding her some plain yogurt instead of her regular food. |

I honestly didn't know that there were 13in and 15in beagles. So I am really not sure about that. As far as weight goes I'm gonna have to say that she is 2-3lbs. In the pictures of Lucy she looks huge compared to Cody. She vomited once. She eats but the people we got her from where feeding her can food but that's not good for puppies ( or so i have read) and now she is on dry food. She used to eat a lot when we gave her can food to aid the switch and now that she is getting just dry food she doesn't eat nearly as much. So yes she is also skinny and little. The thing that really makes me worried about her stool is that last night when she went it was like clear/white which i have never seen before. Thank you for replying I really do apprecite the help!

Yeah, take her to the vet - she may have worms or internal parasites. Internal parasites will also stunt growth for a while since they rob the puppy of essential vitamines and nutrients. Stealth Predator made a good point as well, some dogs are smaller than the breed standards! This may be the case with Cody. If you are really concerned, I would suggest finding an emergency vet clinic and calling them and describing the symptoms to see if they think you should take her in. Monday is a holiday most places, so you may not get her into a regular vet for quite some time. Meanwhile, loose stools generally mean the dog is losing quite a bit of water and with puppies, this can lead to dehydration very quickly. (at least that's what my vet told me.) If I were you, I'd call a vet today, it may cost more than a regular visit but it could save her life. Good luck, keep me posted! Do you have any pictures?

I live in a really small town with nothing too close by the vet is a good 20 minute drive and I dont' know if there is anywhere around here that does emergency visits. Since Cody isn't eatting her food I was wondering if we could put some water in with it. Do you think that would help at all. Do you think that a store bought worm medicine would work or is that something that I shouldn't mess with unless I'm sure. I posted some pictures so hopefully that worked. Did you have any trouble potty training your beagle cause cody just doesn't seem to get the hang of it. I dont' know if it's cause she is sick or because she's blind. I really apprecite all your feedback. You're very helpful and I can't thank you enough.

Yeah, you could put some water in with her food. Also, since she's not eating you might try canned food. It tends to be more attractive to dogs! I wouldn't buy any worm medicine from the store because you don't know for sure she has worms or what kind. You will likely have to pay for deworming at the vets anyways, so I would save your money.
As for training, Lucy got the hang of it QUICK! She is very food motivated, so she will do almost anything for her favorite treats. Is cody blind for sure? If so, that would probably make it a little difficult for her in some areas for sure! Carrie sent me this link to a GREAT clicker training site... www.clickerlessons.com/index.html I have had some experience with clicker training, so I am really enjoying this site and this method of training. Just something you might want to look into. Be patient with Cody, she is still very young and not feeling well. I would limit any training sessions with her right now to only 5 minutes until she's feeling better. And always remember to end the sessions while things are still going well! I'm going to check out your pictures! Hope this helped some. Sounds like you are going to have to hang on until Tuesday to see the vet. Just make sure she is getting enough water... |

Cute pics! Looking at Cody she looks like a 13 inch beagle! She didn't look profoundly tiny to me, so I wouldn't worry too much!
I did notice that her stomach seems bloated, is it tight or soft? A bloated tight stomach is indicative of worms (I don't remember what type...). Other than that she looks like a little beagle puppy! ![]() |

Thanks for that link on clicker training looks like a good idea . You were right about the worms
she has round worms but hopefully I can get her to the vet tomorrow and get that taken care of. Other than that she is doing better she is eatting a playing more than she was so that's reassuring. It's good to hear that she isn't really tiny, My guess would be that the worms kinda stunned her growth a bit. But hopefully that will be taken care of soon and she'll start growing and being the heathly happy puppy she should be. |

Cody's first vet appointment was yesterday. It went alright I guess. Didn't really like the Vet though the rest of the office staff were really helpful but he just seemed like he wasn't too into it ya know? But anywayCody's 3lbs 3 oz. And she got her first shot the distemper with corona I think. She goes back in a month for a booster. They told me to keep giving her the wormer I got so I guess all in all everything is good. It freaked me out a bit because the one lady asked where we got cody and we told her and she said of we had one from that same litter here a few days ago and shortly after it died. Supposedly that one was the healthiest one. That mademe so sad and kinda worry about Cody a bit but then I thought that is Cody already outlasted the " healthiest one" then chances are she's probably goint to be just fine. I wish I had something more excited to share but that's pretty much it.

I'm so sorry to hear Cody was ill.
I'm glad she seems to be better and I hope you have her for a long time to come. Oh and don't forget to post some pictures of her. You've got to be super careful where you get pups from, especially now days with the HUGE increase in backyard breeding and puppymills. Anyhoo...thanks for keeping us updated on her progress. Good luck with everything. Cass. |
