Welcome to Global Paw!
Bostons are wonderful dogs...I don't have one myself though. I have a long coat Chihuahua.Breeding is a very serious thing. I'm so glad you've decided to do all the research before even attempting it. What you'll need to do is to get your dogs evaluated by judges (several if you can) to make sure their type (structure) is right. The easiest way to do that is to enter them in some dog shows. Join your local Boston Terrier club (the 'local' one may be a national one..not one in your town) and Kennel Club then attend those shows with your dogs. These shows are for evaluating breeding stock to make sure the dogs look and move the way they should (no point in breeding Bostons that don't look like Boston's, right? ). Next you'll need to, when your dogs are 2yrs old, get the dogs tested for all genetic problems that are associated with the breed. This is to make sure that they don't pass on anything to their pups. The last thing you want is unhealthy pups. Then in addition they'll, of course, need a basic health check and vaccination. Dogs shouldn't be bred under 2yrs of age because there are some health tests that can't be done until that age, so you won't know if they have anything bad to pass on until after they've been tested and because they haven't finished growing until after they're 2yrs old. Temperament is important as well. As I don't show or breed myself I'm simply going to assume that talking to other people in the clubs about the Boston temperament (and of course learning the standard well) will tell you if your dogs have the right temperament for their breed. Once you've done all of that, you can start to think about breeding. I highly recommend you find another member of the Boston Terrier club you join, who breeds, that can mentor you. That's the best way to learn everything you need to know about Boston's and breeding. Breeding can be dangerous and expensive. C-sections can cost a lot of money (thousands of dollars) and you can lose all the pups and/or your bitch. So it's not something to be taken lightly. Again, I applaud you for wanting to know everything you can before you get into it. Personally I wouldn't want to do it and would have the dogs fixed and just enjoy them as pets, but after you learn everything you can...you can make your own informed decision about it. Actually you might really enjoy getting involved with the breed. Showing and perhaps dog sports as well. Sorry I'm rambling now. LOL Anyhoo...welcome to the site. I look forward to chatting with you. Oh and please post some pictures of your pups for us. We LOVE pictures. ![]() Cass. |

Hello and welcome to GP!
First off I am glad you asked the breeding question here and before your babies are of age to breed There are lots of reputable breeders on here who can give you some really great info. Also are you going to show your dogs? Are they that great of a specimen of the breed to be bred? Are you aware that a ceasarean section may be necessary for your bitch because she is so small? Are you aware of all the money and time it takes to raise a litter of pups as well as what it would cost you to care for the mother if she does run into problems? There are lots of questions to ask yourself before you just breed two dogs together. Your babies just may make better pets being spayed and neutered than a breeding pair, Bostons are full of health problems. But this is the place to learn before you act on it so stick around and have fun ![]() |

Hope I'm not reading this wrongly but I wouldn't even contemplate breeding from your girl until she's at least on her second season and most preferably until she's two years of age.
As others have said there's a good chance of her needing a c-section. Then of course there are many things that can and do go wrong. It is not easy having a litter and all those late nights and staying up before, during and after she has the litter. Have you been advised by someone well known in the breed that the two dogs will go together and that there are no problems in either of their lines etc.? Well done on coming here though and asking questions. The Book of the Bitch is most peoples bibles and you can get it from Amazon etc. |

Welcome aboard! You have recieved some great advice so far! If you have anymore questions, you can post them in our Breeding Concerns forum... and please don't take some of the advice too personally. This is sometimes a very touchy topic for some people, but there are those willing to help you and educate. Hope you stick around... we'd love to see some pictures of your babies
