Welcome to Global Paw!
Nice to have another Chihuahua person. I have a 16yr old male long coat myself (that's him in my signature and avatar) his name is Jesse James. I hope you'll post some pictures of your Chi for us. We just LOVE pictures. Cass. |

chihuahua help!
We have had our Chi for 10 days, Hes 1yr. I have been trying to toilet train him, but am having no luck. I take him out at least every hour, tell him to pee pee, praise him when he does, which isnt very often, and he still keeps peeing and pooing in the house (on our persion rugs). He is pooing at least 3 times a day, and im getting really fed up of it now. Please Help!

Welcome to GP.
I don't know but I've been led to believe by Chi people in the past that males are extemely difficult to house train and this is a well known trait of the breed. With my boy, who is a Spanish Water Dog, and had lived outside for his first 6 years I just used to tell him no and then happily took him outside and told him to have a wee wee there. Within a couple of weeks he was clean and I was then able to take him to friends houses afterwards. He still has the odd accident in the kitchen but he's a lot better now than when he first came. |

Hi and welcome to you and your little Chihuahua. I have a 14 year old Chi. named Delsi. She house trained in record time, and even though she has now eyes now, she still holds it till I put her out.
First off you should not be letting an untrained dog run loose in your house or you may never get him trained. Use a crate and also you can tether him to you so he can't go anywhere. NEVER let him loose. Continue taking him outside and use lots of praise. He will train, but I don't know how long it will take. All dogs have their own time. |

Always room for one more

Check out our articles on housebreaking. There's a great one stickied in the Puppy forum by flyndog. I just acquired a 1.5 year old Chi mix, so I'm going through the same thing making sure he learns to keep going outside. Fortunately we've only had one accident so far! The key is to keep him with you at all times (you'll need housemates help! My family is great about watching him while I shower or go out), and take him out frequently. I'm also trying to train "Ollie" to go by command, so when he goes pee I say, "good pee Oliver!" and praise him like crazy. Same for poop. It's a long, sometimes frustrating process, but you know how worth it it is knowing you won't have to be cleaning up after him constantly anymore! And we do crate him, like Calgal mentioned, when no one's home to look after him (obviously this can't be for long periods of time, though). Good luck, and welcome!
