hello everyone
Hi I am joining today. I just had my 8 month old Japanese spitz neutered yesterday. He is in so much pain and discomfort I cant bear to see him this way, I cant stop crying. He didnt have any behaviour problems at all. He was always happy and well behaved with an excellent temperament. The dog trainer, vet and magazine editor all advised me to have him neutered as it would be the responsible thing to do. I cant help feeling that I have made a very grave mistake. Some people told me that it would make him depressed - I fear that they could be right after seeing him in this state. My heart is breaking.

Welcome! Dont worry, you made a good decision. We had Radar neutered a while back, and he was in some pain. But, he healed up fine. Neutering doesn't make them depressed, fat, or lazy. Radar has changed much since he was neutered. The only things that changed was that he's now warming up to people faster, and he hasnt been humping...thank God!

Did the Vet. give you any pain medication for him, or tell you to give him baby asprin? I almost forgot........welcome to GP. Keep us up on his progress and any concerns you have. Don't worry, he will be just fine and out of pain soon. Just don't let him run around very hard when he is feeling good. It takes about two weeks to heal properly for a male.

He's fine.
I think the males complain more about the pain than the females and the operation for females is far more intrusive than the males. Like others have said, it does not make them depressed. You made the right decision to neuter him. There are too many unwanted dogs in the world already the last thing we need is more...so neutering and spaying (IMO) are essential for pet dogs. If you're really worried about him, talk to the vet and ask them about the pain and if there is anything you can give him. Oh and Welcome to Global Paw! Cass. |

Hi, welcome to Global Paw!
![]() Don't worry, he will be fine (think about how many dogs have been neutered over the years, he isn't alone! ). I think it will probably be one of the BEST decisions you will have made for your dog. Good on you for going ahead with the operation. He'll recover in no time at all. |

Welcome to GlobalPaw - ITA with everyone - you have done the responsbile thing and had him neutered - don't worry he'll bounce back before you know it and if you are concerned don't be scared to go back to your vet and seek some further assistance.

Welcome! He is perfectly fine, I know he seems in pain, but he did just have surgery
.Please don't think spaying and neutering your pets is bad! It is the best thing for them! My dog Bjorn was such a baby after he was neutered, he was the worst of them all.. my other dogs were fine after the surgery, but Bjorn cried and whined whenever he moved. Some dogs just don't handle pain as well! Did your vet give him pain meds? |

Thank you one and all! Its soo good to have some reassurance. To clarify - the Vet did give me pain killers for him to take. He also had to have 2 baby teeth out and his microchip put in at the same time. He is take half a tablet once a day. I am monitoring him so that he doesnt lick himself, although the nurse gave me the lampshade neck collar - I only use it when I sleep at night as he seems to be miserable with it on otherwise. I have to take Smokie back to the vet for a check up on Wednesday - 7 days after the op. Thank you all once again and its good to be here with all of you.

Thanks for letting us know about the pain meds. I see he had more than one procedure done, which may explain the added discomfort. Hope he feels better soon

Yes he did. I think the tooth ache is gone as he seems to be able to eat, bark and growl now! It is very diffcult to persuade him not to run and jump though. Any advise on this is really welcome. he is sleeping now! so I am more relaxed!
