We just rescued a 3 mo. old female corgi. She seems so gentle and loves to play with our grandchildren. Our 3 yr. old sheltie mix is doing well with her. We have never owned a corgi before and would really appreciate any and all comments. Thanks.

A-w-w-w.....how cute. Welcome, btw. I've only heard wonderful things about them...never owned one, but have met a few. I think you're going to enjoy that breed immensely. Can't wait to hear some stories. I love Shelties too....so agreeable. It's so nice that yours is accepting the new pup so well. Great!

Awww I love Corgis!!! They're so cute!!!! Here's what I know about them:
Being a herding breed these guys are known to be nippers so it is essential they are taught right from the beginning what's allowed to have teeth and what's not. Also when children run around playing it's not uncommon for an untrained Corgis to try to "herd" the children together and their herding method does involve nipping at heels so again with the teaching of what's "herdable" and what's not LOL They're also very stubborn t train, they like to do things their own way and when they decide it's time but as long as the rules are established early that you are in charge then it shouldn't be a problem. These guys LOVE people and love being with someone (what dog doesn't?) and they make excellent companions for both the outdoorsy person and the couch potato though they can't go overly fast for long periods of time because their body simply wasn't designed for that. They can however go for a really long walk as their endurance is pretty good. Keep an eye on their spine during the later years of life (sometimes earlier though depending on breeding). Just like Dacshunds, Corgis can have spinal problems due to their elongated back on short legs. I forget what other health problems they tend to get.... Enjoy your new lil rescue and I'd ove to see pics! Cheers! |

Oh I love Corgis too! When we went up to Mt. St. Helens we sat with a nice couple that brought two Corgis. They were blond and white. I brought my dachshund along too and the dogs played great together. The corgis were so gentle and well behaved. They listened to their owners perfectly and lay down calmly when asked. Nothing like my spastic, hyper dachshund that just wouldn't sit still for all the scooby snacks in the world. I told my dachshund to take a page out of their book and learn to settle down.

Hello Susan, This is what I have learned from them..I have had 2 in my life, they are absolutely wonderful creatures,Heres from the strong side of them; they are very dominant to an extent, stubborn, kinda like a child, they want their way! Just have patience, and she will be just fine, But dont let her get her way with things, cause once they do, they will keep doing it no matter what..lol Mine are definitely Herders,BeBe Herds my son around, the cats and the other dogs..lol, its quite amazing, They seem very mature at such a young age, does yours? If theres any other questions or info you need, please feel free to Contact me at my e-mail address, Have a great Day Susan, and Enjoy the New addition

Welcome and I can't wait to see pictures of your baby!
We also have Corgis and will be more than happy to answer any and all questions about them. Is your baby a Pembroke (no tail) or a Cardigan (tail)? |
