New to globalpaw

My name is Cindy, me and my BF Steve just got a chihuahua she will be 4 years this year. We are having problems with her eating. The person that we got her from all she fed her was people food. And we can not figure out how to feed her dog food.

Welcome aboard! What kind of dog food have you tried? Is it wet/canned, or kibble? Have you tried mixing some canned with the kibble?

Also, has she been seen by the vet? Sometimes dental problems can cause a dog not to eat. Especially if she's only been eating people food, I could imagine that her teeth may not be adapted to eating something hard (unless she was given bones and such).

My best advice, offer her food at scheduled times (morning and night). If she doesn't eat it within 15-30 minutes, pick it up and wait until the next meal time to feed her. Try again, and if she doesn't touch it, back up until next meal time. I've never had a dog that would sit and starve itself because it did not like the dog food. She isn't going to let herself starve... she will eventually eat.

If anything, you can try adding some chicken broth to her food, and let it soak a little. Don't let it soak for too long though, because it will start to grow harmful bacteria. Most dogs can't resist yummy chicken broth on their food.

Best of luck! Were they cooking for her? Or just feeding her whatever? There's one lady on the boards (calgal) who cooks for all of her babies, but it's all healthy. If you'd like to know more, you could send her a PM and I'm sure she'd love to tell you more.

I have a Chihuahua as well. Her name's Abby and she's 6 1/2 years old. What's your Chihuahua's name?

Im curious, what kind of dog food (wet or dry) are you feeding your girl?

I have a Chihuahua as well, his name is Jesse James and he's 17 this year.

IceyBlueSibes gave some great advice about the food. Chihuahua's can be picky eaters sometimes, so you'll just have to keep trying. If you do feed canned food make sure you brush her teeth, Chihuahua's often have problems with their teeth if they're not looked after (my guy lost all his teeth due to his previous owners neglect).
