Post Holland Smoushond- rescue

Hello, I found this site today and thought it may assist me in finding information about Holland Smoushond owners or breeders in the Mississippi area, or any one who knew someone who may have lost a smoushond in the hurricaine. I rescued one, or at least I think he's one. His name is Biloxi, we call him Billy. I got him about November 7th, last year at the Gulfport, MS shelter. They new nothing about him, except they thought he had been in the "system" for about six weeks. I am not looking to give him back, cause it would kill my airedale, Rosie, and probably so the same to my wife, Meg. I am curious about these little dogs, as they are so hard to find in US. So, does anybody know anybody? Please let me know if you can. I thank you and Biloxi Bill thanks you too.

Welcome to Global Paw!

Since the Dutch Smoushond is such an amazingly rare breed I doubt your little rescue guy is one. Smoushonds look similar to a shaggy mutt so it's much more likely that your dog is a mixbreed. If he were a Smoushond I'm sure his owner/breeder would have been frantically trying to find him and he'd most likely be chipped and/or tattooed. However, having said that...stranger things have happened and rare breeds do sometimes end up in rescue.

Whether he's a Smoushond or not, I'm so glad you rescued him and gave him a great home. I hope you'll post some pictures of him and your Airedale Terrier (gorgeous breed ) for us to see.

Enjoy the site!

Cass.

Welcome to GlobalPaw! Good to have you.

Googling breeders of the breed I found one in IL. No date, no other information, just a name, location and number. I highly doubt there are any of this breed circulating in the US. There's no telling if the aforementioned breeder was even breeding them. Much more likely you have a mix. If you're concerned your doggie was misplaced during the hurricane you should have him checked for a microchip if you haven't already.

Looking forward to getting to know you and Biloxi. Do you have any pictures of him?

I have to agree with the others...I really doubt such an incredibly rare breed <if there are any in the US to begin with> would be "lost" and with no id, no tattoo, no microchip and apparently no one trying to find the dog. My guess is that you have a cute little mixed breed....

Welcome to the board!
