New - Chicago burbs
Hi there,
I'm new to the site - stumbled across it while looking for advice. I'm the proud father of two pugs - a 6yr old fawn called Ralphie, and a 3 yr old black pug/pekinese cross called Fred. Unfortunately Ralph's had his run ins with bad eye health - but he does good for himself. Fred's getting a little portly, but he never eats any more than Ralph. he has a double-jointed back leg which makes him stand on his toes. I massage that leg, toes and muscles every so often which I think he loves. I'm looking for advice as I have to go away for 5 months on a residential training course (I'm in law enforcement) - but these are not hardy dogs. My boys wouldn't do well in a traditional kennel for sure, and Fred is the sensitive type that needs to feel like he's touching someone at night in order to go to sleep. Yes, he gets the bottom of the bed - between my legs half the time. I don't have any friends or family whom would be willing to look after my boys - but I don't want to leave them in alien surroundings with completely strange people, smells etc. Can anyone offer some advice on long term care for my boys while I'm away? What effects it has on them? Places to take them? Things to consider? I'm originally from England and there is an outside bet that my mom could look after them - but she lives in the UK - and then I'd have to put them through the stresses of flight - and with Ralph's breathing issues (he's a noisy breathing pug) - I'd be a concerned that he'd be ok. I'm frantic looking for something that will be good for my boys - I need somewhere where I can be away to work without having them on my mind wondering if they are ok. Any suggestions, advice would be greatfully accepted... From a concerned father of two.... |

Welcome to GlobalPaw first off
Have you looked into pet sitters for your boys (here in Australia there are a few businesses that actually have pet sitters come in and feed your pets and play with them while you're away). I'm not sure if they actually stay at your actual house though. Another option is to get a dog loving house sitter - maybe someone you work with knows of a someone who'd be available to house sit and dogsit at the same time - that way your dogs get to stay home and have someone with them as well. Good luck - I hope you are able to work something out that suits all of you! |

Thanks for the welcome
and for the suggestionsBoth my boys are 'cuddle bunnies' - a housesitter would be ideal as if I'm going to be away - at least they could still be in familiar surroundings. My boys are sensitive little guys It's going to break my heart enough leaving them for 5 months - so I have to make sure they'll be well loved and cared for. |

Welcome to GP!
![]() You might try to find a pug-specific forum and see if there are any members there that do pug-sitting. That way you'd know they're familiar with the breed, and you can kind of "check them out" by reading their posts. Dog clubs or organizations in your area might be able to recommend a dog sitter or you could look up some pet-sitters online (type "pet sitter" in google and see what you come up with. Their are organizations of pet-sitters that can refer you to a member in their area). Your vet or groomer also could probably recommend someone. Hope that helps and you're able to find a good temp. home/caregiver for your little ones! I know it's not easy finding someone you trust, and for so long, but I think you'll be able to do it. ![]() |

Welcome to Global Paw. I'm hoping you can find a sitter in your area. Try asking at some local veterinarians to see if they have anyone to recommend.
I'm somewhat in your area, but I don't think they would do well with my crazy bunch, or I'd offer to help you out. |

Hi and welcome to you and your boys. Thay are just adorable. Would your mom be willing to come to your house if you paid her way?
Contacting the Pug rescue group may help you out. I hope you do find someone to help you. |
