Hey guys, I just signed up yesterday and wanted to quickly introduce myself. My name is Kendra and I live in Houston, Texas, I recently got a male Papillon for Christmas after a long search. His "official" name is Jasper Jazz Lincoln (long story on that one, lol) But we call him Jazz for short. This is the first full breed dog I have owned. I happened to stumble upon this website on accident and am glad I did. Seems to be a very informative site, plus everyone sounds pretty nice too. Antway just wanted to give a quick background and submitt my first question. Jazz is 7 months old and I really want to get him fixed for all those terretorial reasons, but before I do I would really like to stud him out. But soon before he gets too much older. It was really hard for me to find him so I don't know where to start looking or asking. I would really prefer someone locally. Can anyone give me a good starting point? I don't know anyone who breeds or has bred and the lady I got Jazz from has breed Papillons for 12 years and I think she is calling it quites. I will attach a pic of the little squirt, if I can figure out how. Thanks everybody!!

Welcome! Jazz is a cute little pet. One other person here, Rip's girl has a Papillon. You two can have fun exchanging stories.
May I ask what your motivation or reason is for breeding your dog? If you want to neuter him before studdy behavior begins, you would need to do it by 6 months of age or there about. Breeding any dog shouldn't take place until they're at least 2 years old and only then if all the genetic health tests have been done and look satisfactory. And the dog has been shown and evalutated by experts (judges etc) to be conformationally and temperamentally outstanding specimens. To improve upon the last generation or to improve the breed is the only responsible reason for breeding. Please check out our breeding forum and Crossfire Bulldogs is a fine breeder who can give you all kinds of information. There are a few others here too, as well, I believe. Hope you enjoy the forums. |

Thanks alot for the replies. Looks like Jazz will be making an appointment soon to get fixed. I took your advise and went to the breeding forum (I didn't see it before or I would'nt have bothered yall about it here) and I don't have any real need for Jazz to be bred. To tell the truth I was kinda sketchy about it from the beginning. Now, I know it's not something I can't afford to do responsibly and properly anyway. Do you think I might be getting it done soon enough to stop the behavior? His "pink thing" LOL, has already come out and I've seen him marking a couple of times but no real annoying behavior yet. His was born july 23 of '04. Anyway I know the sooner the better and so I will make an appointment ASAP. Hey rip's girl drop me a line!! Your Pap is precious. Don't you just love the breed? My little one is my best friend, and man are they smart little
dogs!! He goes everywhere with me!! Thanks again everybody for your replys and comments!!! Sincerely, Kendra |

Welcome! You've got a cute dog. I'm glad to hear you're not breeding, to tell you the truth. There are about 5 million dogs euthanized in US shelters, we don't need more, do we? He's old enough to be neutered.

He was about 6 months and a week at that time. Wasn't that long ago. Thanks for your advise about the breeding. That was some good advice but after getting the anti-breeding replys I think I'll just get him fixed and enjoy him all to myself. Thanks again calgal!!!!

Hey Kendra,
I'm glad to hear you're not going to breed him. Not that he isn't ADORABLE, but because Papillons are very difficult to breed without health problems. And using him as a stud before 2 years of age isn't wise, either.. So, I think altering him would be your best bet. I just love this breed! They are very fragile, which is a downside for me, but my little guy just keeps me laughing.. He's got such personality. Not without his share of temperament problems and health issues, but he handles both very well, and is doing some very basic agility training. (Just got the OK from the vet to start it up very slowly again, he says Ripley's knees aren't that bad) He LIVES for agility, so hopefully when we decide to go for it and neuter him (JFYI he isn't neutered for health reasons and severe sensitivity to anesthesia) his knees can be corrected as well, and we can start competing! |
