Yes the SPCA is one of the places you can go to get an adult rescue dog. There are also dog rescues and breed specific rescues all over the place. Rescues are actually a network of foster carers rather than a shelter that take care of dogs who might be put to sleep in a shelter or who have special needs (relating to breed, or because they need more rehabilitation). These are great places to get dogs from.
Search google for them by simply typing in your location and 'dog rescue' or 'collie rescue' or 'retriever rescue' etc....

Rescues can match you to a dog better than a shelter can, IMO.

Cass.

I think it is great that you are doing your research before getting a dog, too many dogs end up in shelters because people do not think everything through. If most of your household works or goes to school full time an adult dog would be the best IMO, and probably one with low energy, so you don't come home to a trashed house due to a high energy dog that got bored sitting in the house all day. Goldens are high energy dogs, but I did a search and it seems collies are a low energy dog, but the shed ALOT, so if there are possible allergies this might not be a good fit, I also found that Chesapeake Bay retrievers are a low energy dogs (according to a list i found) and the have only slight shedding and they are beautiful dogs (one of my favorite breeds, though I have never owned one, I had a friend that did and he was the sweetest dog ever) But there are plently of dog breeds that would be perfect, and Cass made a great suggestion about checking online, Petfinder.com is a great sight as well, you can choose age, size breed ect, put in your zip and it will show you all the dogs that meet your requirements in your area.

Wow that you so much all of you for your wonderful advice. I haven't started the process yet. My son does school online so he would be home all day except when he has sports or activities to do. I will try researching with those sites you mentioned. I think first things first is I need to get the house cleaned before we get a dog.

Sorry for responding so late but my computer had a virus and we had to buy a new one.
