Hello from a Newbie

Hello: I recently joined this site. I have a 9 y.o. male mixed breed who recently became blind due to diabetic glaucoma. The diabetes was diagnosed only this past March. Slowly Rikky is showing me the way to adapt to his new predictament. He is such a patient, loving creature.

Hello and welcome Vicki. Where in CA. are you? I'm in Lompoc. My almost 16 year old Chihuahua had a stroke and died last September and she had not eyes due to an injury in one and glaucoma in the other. Both were removed, but she didn't get depressed. She was like the energizer bunny.........just kept right on going. I was in awe of her little spirit and learned a lesson from her. Hope to meet your little Rikky soon.

Welcome! Sorry about you dogs blindness. I'm glad you are getting his diabetes under control. Any chance for pictures of your boy?

Thank you for the prompt reply. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Yes, it is amazing how quickly dogs adapt to their new conditions. Rikky has a certain yelp if he need assistance finding a door or a way out of a corner. He isn't scared just telling me he needs assistance.

Here is a website for a worth while cause - defeating canine cancer. About 9 years ago my female cocker/poodle female was put to sleep due to lung cancer.

Hi Vicki and Rikky, welcome to Global Paw!

One of my dogs, Harley (who is 12 1/2 years old) has cataracts in both eyes, and in one eye he's pretty much completely blind. He does some 'odd' things sometimes (like he will stand right outside his dog door for ages, while looking inside the house, and he wont actually come inside, but he'll stay like that for ages... stuff like that).

Hello and welcome! We had a blind toy poodle once, who used to nip us (I was much younger) if we spooked him! Luckily my 12 year old dachshund doesn't have cataracts yet! He can't see very well at night though.

I live in the Central Valley and go to San Fransisco atleast every month. (One of my friends moved there)

Welcome to the site!

My cat, who we recentally had to put down, of fifteen years had diabetes. We were able to get it under control and he lived a normal life. However, the diabetes lead into a pancreas problem, and that we couldn't control...

It is amazing how dogs adapt to disabilities, isn't it?
