Hello from Washington
Hello, my name is Breawna. I have two dogs, a Black Labrador named Elly Mae and a White Boxer named Georgia. I have one Maine Coon cat named Jenna, and two pet rats as well as seven rescue rats at the moment. As well as a Sulcata Tortoise named Bradley and a Bearded Dragon named Axel. I absolutly love pit bulls and hope to own one again someday soon; but with all of the BSL crap going on right now I'm afraid I can't. STUPID BSL!
Anyway, I will post some pictures for you all because I know how much forums love pictures, and I hope to get posting around soon! Georgia - Eight year old White Boxer ![]() And a signature I made of my girls. ![]() I look forward to posting! |

Welcome to the site! Your girls are gorgeous!
![]() I've always wanted some rats, but my mom won't let one in the house. LOL It was hard enough getting her to accept the ferrets that she calls "enlongated rats". And my brother would LOVE to see pictures of your Beardie. He's been wanting one for a year or two. If you have any care tips or information on them that would be understandable for a responsible 13 year old (he's a VERY good kid...helps me out with the dogs all of the time and loves my Guinea Pigs), please feel free to share so I can pass it along to him. If I can convince my mom that they aren't "snakes with legs", I may get him one this summer for a birthday present. But before then I want him to know what he is getting into. |

Ritz, My mom hated both rats and ferrets. One day I just brought home a rat though and she fell in love! Now we have ten. But she absolutly refuses to own ferrets at all.
I'd love to share some information and pictures with you to show your brother. I have no doubt he wouldn't be a good Beardie owner; beardies are absolutly awesome pets for children. Here's some information, first... Bearded dragons should not live with other beardies. They like living alone. I would suggest adopting an adult dragon, because young beardies are much, much harder to care for than adults. For beardies under one year of age, they may eat up to 100 crickets a day. 100 crickets is $8.00, so it can get fairly pricey feeding the quickly growing young ones. They also need to be fed veggies daily. Mealworms CANNOT be fed to young bearded dragons because they are extremely hard to digest for the little beardies and can be killed by the impaction these little worms cause to their body. With beardies over a year, they are mostly vegetarians now. They still need insects; crickets can be fed (only 20- a day now that they are older), mealworms can be fed now that the body is stronger, as well as wax worms and sometimes pinkies for the largest beardies. With my bearded dragon, I feed him a handfull of Romane Lettuce each day, and crickets, mealworms & waxworms once a week - every other week. Beardies live up to eight years old and are wonderful pets for kids! They will sit on your shoulder contently, go outside with you, bask in the sun, etc. Bearded Dragons need UVB lights. I suggest Mercury Vapor bulbs and so does my vet. They are $70 and last up to a year +. There is also Reptisun, and they are around $50 but need to be replaced much more often than Mercury Vapor Bulbs. This is the only peeve I have with my beardie; his costly lights. Tank size for one bearded dragon needs to be at least 45 gallons long. One side of the tank needs to be 100*F and the other side of the tank needs to be around 80*F. They need things to climb on/bask on, etc. I strongly suggest your brother to the forum at Bearded Dragon . org . There are some great, knowledgable and supportive people there as well as pictures you can show your mom to prove they are absolutly not nor or they anything like snakes. If you have any questions about beardies, or if your brother has any questions about beardies, don't hesitate to contact me or have your brother contact me! I hope I could be of some help to you and your family! |

Welcome to GP!
I, too, am from Washington. Fortunately, I live in an area where BSL isn't enforced... Unfortunately, I don't own a pitbull nor does a pitbull own me. ![]() I do volunteer work for a rescue shelter in Longview, Washington, called Rescued Paws. They rescue, rehabilitate, and adopt out furkids of every breed from kittens to rodents, chihuahuas to pitbulls. I fell in love with a Pitbull there named Bandit, who was the sweetest most awesome pitbull I have ever met. 100% innocent. He was, however, very stubborn. So I worked with him for a week, teaching him how to sit, lie down, walk with me, etc. I was surprised at how fast he learns! I went home for the weekend and came back to discover he had been adopted out to a loving forever home where he will be spoiled forever and ever. I was sad to see him go, but at the same time I was happy to see that an abandoned pitbull got another chance at life. Another dog we had at the shelter was a black and tan coon-hound named Lobo. *sigh* ... Lobo... ![]() Lobo was very special to me - I was the only one he would go to and the only one he would trust. He had been sick for awhile and they weren't quite sure what it was. I sat on the porch of the shelter and he came out to see me. He crawled in my lap, curled up, and went to sleep. I had my friend take pictures and I showed them to my mom, who immediately wanted me to adopt him and bring him home. I wasn't able to go back into town until the next afternoon, so we had to wait. The next afternoon came around and I called the shelter and asked if Lobo was still there. The lady said that Lobo was at the vet having a checkup to see how he's been doing. She said I could come in in about an hour to see him and bring him home. I figured, "Cool. It takes me that long to get there, so I'll leave now." So off I went to the shelter... When I got there, I was greeted by the owner; tears running down her face... She informed me that Lobo had severe kidney failure and there was nothing they could do to save him... He had been PTS. It's been nearly 2 years... and to this day I still miss him. His face would make anyone melt into a puddle of goo... ![]() Anyway, sorry to go off in a tangent there... I guess, in short, what I'm trying to say is: Welcome to GP! Where dogs: run our lives, are our best friends, and we are theirs. ![]() |

Thanks for the info and the pictures!
I'm going to show them to my brother. There are always tons of Beardies on Craiglist needing be be rehomed, so finding an adult shouldn't be a problem. Actually, I walked into our local feed store the other day and they had a HUGE Beardie in there. Looked about as big as that second one you posted. Absolutely gorgeous. |

![]() At the one in Illinois, 3 dogs and 21 cats a DAY were euthanized. Everybody would dump their pets in the back kennels and leave without a word.. And yes, pitties can be quite stubborn, but they are VERY smart dogs! Quote:
