Hi Everyone!!!
I am new to this site and very excited to be here! I was posting on another site, but they are waaaay to clique-ish and snobby so I left. Anyways...my bf and I are the proud parents of Joules, an 11 month old McNab. Not sure if she is pure bred or not, we got her from a shelter and she was labeled Border Collie mix. Well, after some research on the net, we have determined she is not a border collie, but a Mc Nab. We have had her since mid-May and are just having the times of our lives. I am going to try and post some pics so you can see my pretty baby girl! TTFN! Jodi |

For over a century these dogs have been working sheep and cattle and are more popular than ever with ranchers. They are a native stockdog from Mendocino County, CA. via the Grampian Hills of Scotland. In 1868 Alexander Mc Nab came to the U.S. from Glasgow, Scotland. It was here he developed his line of Mc Nab shepherds from carefully selected Border Collies. These dogs are medium sized, alert and cat-footed. Their coat is black with white markings. Their are 2 types, long haired and short haired. The long haired Mc Nab is adapted to the severe winters of Scotland. The short haired Mc Nab is good for the summer heat and the dry, steep ranges of Mendocino County. These dogs weigh 40 to 50 lbs. and stand 18-22" at the shoulders. I had no idea what a "McNab" was either, but i found this........maybe others can add on. |

Ritz459 - That is NOT a stupid question! I myself didn't even know there was a breed called McNab until a few weeks ago.
Apparently, this guy McNab bred his two collies with selected spanish herding dogs and the resulting breed was called the McNab. Quite often, the McNab is confused with the Border Collie as there are quite a bit of similarities. Here are some websites with some more, albeit limited, info: http://www.legacyconnemaras.com/McNabPhotoAlbum.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McNab_%28dog%29 http://www.dogswithjobs.com/about_do...eds/mcnab.html |

I don't know if you would consider it a rare breed persay, but then again maybe it is since so many people have never heard of it...? I do know there isn't much info on the web...I had a tough time finding what info I did (see above links). The only reason I even started researching the breed is because someone on a border collie website said Joules was not a border collie and looked more like a Mc Nab than a border collie. So, I did some research and every description and picture I have read / seen point exactly to my little girl. But like I said we got her from a shelter and she was labeled a border collie mix. So I don't really exactly know what she is but she seems to exhibit more Mc Nab traits than border collie traits.
But either way, I don't care what breed she is...we love her no matter what! |
