I have looked but many of the facialities in my area seem to be charging upwards of $250- $400 dollars for a pet,, please let me know it would be very much appreciated for myself and the pet that i am able to give a home too thanks , mike.

These shelter dogs needs feeding, training, health checkups, sometimes surgery, spaying/neutering and all, and that is pretty much what you pay for. Go look at your local shelters or petfinder, there's just too many dogs needing new homes.

Mike I would check shelters out and also local rspca. Sometimes people need to rehome a loved animal because of circumstances.
Hope you find a dog to love

Hi, welcome to the site!
I'm sure you can find rescue dogs for a cheaper price just take your time and look around (never rush this because you'll have the dog for up to 15yrs, depending on the age you adopt it at), but a word of warning....if the shelter doesn't spay or neuter the dog (which would save on the adoption fee) you're going to have to pay out money for that anyway. So in the end it's going to cost you around the same (hope that made sense).
Dogs are expensive to keep, so getting one that is already fixed, vaccinated, wormed etc... is actually saving you money.

By the way, I'm extremely happy you're looking into a shelter dog. Shelters/rescues have some of the most amazing dogs needing homes. I found my little lovebug *points to her avatar picture* in a shelter too.

Cass.

Do you have a specific breed in mind? Any specific needs like good with kids, cats, short hair vs. long? Perhaps if you gave some specifics we could help do a search for you.

The past 3 dogs I adopted cost me $200 TOTAL in adoption fees.
However, food, monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention, routine check ups, unexpected emergencies, and so on have added up to far more than that.
Even if you do find a dog in your range of cost, keep in mind that maintaining a healthy lifestyle for your new addition will be a huge financial commitment.
If you are worried about just the price of purchasing a dog now, then you might struggle when the time comes to care for it.
I wish you luck with the eventual adoption. But maybe you should consider saving now and adopting later.
Keep us updated!

Welcome to GP! You can find many "free" dogs needing homes too. But be prepared, just because the dog is free, doesn't mean he won't cost you money on vet bills, etc...

Here is one I found in the NH area : http://nh.craigslist.org/pet/88670436.html

And another in MA: http://boston.craigslist.org/pet/90990593.html

And another: http://boston.craigslist.org/pet/90850942.html

And another: http://boston.craigslist.org/pet/90693619.html

Anyway, check out craigslist.org and look in the pets section. These animals needs homes as well as they'll probably end up in the pound if they aren't homed.

You can also check petfinder.com in the classified ads http://www.petfinder.com/post/classifiedhop.html for people needing to re-home their pets.

Hope that helps and glad to see you're on a forum to learn about dogs, etc.

Hope you stick around. We'd love to see pics of your new family member when you get him/her.
