Introduction..

I came across this site today and figured I'd join after reading some of the posts.

We have a 9 month old little guy named Buddy. He's an odd mix;(Dachshund & Border collie) but he's cute and his personality is very good so far. He gets along well with the cat and the kids.

He's still a little shy and still getting used to us. He's been here for about 2 weeks now.

He's not as playful as the kids want him to be, but he's just fine for me. LOL He's not had one accident in the house since we brought him home (good boy) He was an outside dog. But he's inside with us now. He was afraid of everything when we 1st brought him home, but he's perking up now and trying to investigate instead of hiding behind me all the time.

I hope to learn more here.

Hello and welcome. It will take awhile for him to adjust and become comfortable and know he's part of the family, and it sounds like he's already starting to adjust a bit.

Hello and welcome!! Something to keep in mind, anytime Buddy cowers i fear don't coddle him as this only encourages the behviour. Instead just go abut your business like nothing's wrong and Buddy will see that since you're unaffected there must be nothing to worry about. BTW I would love to see pics of him!

Thanks Oc. We've been doing that with not cuddling him when he's acting afraid of things. I had to fuss at my daughter for that. She'd say oh Buddy it's ok... grrrr. She stopped once I explained it to her. I told her do not pet or even speak to him. Just keep going as if nothing is wrong.

We took him to the river, since he was afraid of men... (he's a lot better about it now- He's let 2 of my male neighbors pet him, and he's very loving and friendly to my husband now

) I made him walk past a man and 2 children fishing several times. Everytime Buddy would try to hide behind me, I gently led him back to my side where he belongs and kept on walking. After a few times of this- he got the idea and stayed where I wanted him to. (he got lots of praise then!!) I didn't want him to get friendly with the stange man-I didn't even know who he was- I just wanted him to walk past without being fearful. It worked. He is still shy of strangers but he will sniff then and back off; if he feels like letting them pet him he'll hang around and get a pet. But if he backs off I don't force it. He will usually come around for attention after the 1st meeting with people.

I think someone may have hit him with a newspaper or some other big object. My husband had a newpaper in his hand (not rolled up, he just had it in his hand as he was getting out of the car.) and Buddy tried to run away from him. last night he came in from work with a pizza box, and Buddy shyed away. My hub put the box down and spent some time with Buddy. So it will take some time. I'm not sure how to deal with that problem. So far everything else is going well.

He's a great dog. When he tries to wander when we're on a walk, all he needs is a gentle tug of "this way" and he'll go where ever I want him to. He's also learning that he MUST sit before he can have his food bowl. Yesterday I picked up his bowl to feed him and sat right down. LOL so he's learning. (yes he knows sit command) We don't fee feed. He's got to earn it. Sometimes he tries to get pushy for attention. Mostly 1st thing in the morning when we get up. If he's jumping all around and trying to mess with me that way-- I ignore him; get my coffee. Then I go sit down and call him to me.. Then he gets his attention. It's so hard not to pet him when he looks so cute and he's so happy to see me. But I do know that allowing this can cause trouble later.
