Husky Momma

Hey guys! I'm new to the forum. we've just adopted a husky mix all white (with brown dots on her head) and blue eyes from the pound (named her Dottie) who we found out a week later is pregnant! Hopefully she'll deliver before Thanksgiving. Anyway, I hope to hear great advice from everyone here!

Thank You. I need all the information I can get. Waiting is the hard part lol. Being she's adopted we don't know when she was bred But we estimate this being her 9th week since the pups first started moving and milk leaking last Thursday the 10th. lol looks like we'll be staying home this Turkey Day. Ive heard that bigger breeds sometimes take longer...but how long do you think I should wait until calling the vet?? I gave her til Thanksgiving...

Has the Vet. checked her yet? He would be the one to let you know if or when to bring her in. Where did you get her that she wasn't spayed already?

Welcome to Global Paw! I agree that she should see the vet, they'll be able to give you good advice and make sure everything is going smoothly.

We have a Breeding section here, if you have any specific questions that you think we might be able to help with (we have a few breeders and vet techs on the board who are willing to help).

Cass.

Yes she's been to the vet. He's the one who confirmed her pregnancy 2 weeks ago. We got her from our local animal control. They do NOT spay animal for you. You adopt them and sign a contract to do in within 30 days of the adoption. At that point, we had no clue she was pregnant. Until she saw the vet. He said he thought she was but he wasn't sure and to bring her back in a week. Lo and Behold, she was. Animal Control didn't say anything when I gave them a letter from our vet. Just an "Oh really? Ok..well I'll file this." And so...at the bottom of the contract it states that they are not responsible for any health conditions that the animals have (this includes pregnancy). It doesn't bother me, we love Dottie and we're certainly not taking her back to the pound just because her previous owner let her get pregnant. RIght now my concern is placing the puppies (which I've already began to do) and making sure she is spayed. (so far her spay date is the 20th of December, but it may have to be pushed back until the pups are weaned,)

Well I dont know- we have Labs and raised chows in the past . They didnt take long but it depends on the bitch/breed in genral. Our Dixie(Lab) started around or over 9:30am and her last pup was born at 1pm(I think) she had 8 puppies. My mom had a chow bitch that went from 10pm to 12 or 1am. Now I agree, since you dont know when she was bred the vet can help way more then me- I'm only 19 and I have knowledge from experiance but since there are vet techs and probably more experianced breeders here you should find this forum very helpful. And yes waiting is the hard part- birth is so wonderful to experiance and waiting to see the puppies is so hard but exciting. Its nice that I am now allowed in with my mom when ever we have a litter on the way( Only 2 thus far). I get more experianced that way since I too am looking into breeding Labradors and doing rescue. Now if you have any questions please post them, I have seen(rasied, trained, etc) a few litters of pups in my life time and I'm a starting trainer. I have researched welping and rearing a litter- I can answer most "how to's" when it comes to rearing puppies. Now with the welping part , I'll be honest, I dont have alot of experiance with wepling- I just started and most is what I read. I know the basics and what to expect, when and what signs to look for if vet assistanc is required, and what to do in some situation- but thats it- my mom has that knowledge. But I'm sure you'll get alot of help and support- this forum seems very nice and very helpful.

Thumbs up

Thanx you guys. I'm only 21, always loved animals (particularly dogs). I'm forfeiting a mini vacation on Thanksgiving to gather with family to stay with Dottie. My family (not the animal lovers like me and my hubby) think I am nuts to stay home with a pregnant animal Kinda upsets me. But the way I see it, we chose her to live here and I'm not going to adopt a dog, chain her out back and go on vacation when she is due any day now. She's apart of the family as far as I'm concerned. She's a rescue so I know nothing about the kind of dog she was bred to, when she was bred or anything, so I wont let her out of my site! We only give her 5-15 minutes outside a time now (it was about an half an hr before she got this long in her pregnancy) because I want to keep an eye on her. Anyway, thank you guys for answering my questions. I have a post on the Breeding Concerns forum under "Hey Crossfire" where I was asking about temp. Nice to meet you guys!
