I don't understand the constant desire from people for dogs to have "a job". I don't work on a farm or do any sort of labor that requires a dog's assistance.

The only thing I want a dog for is companionship... so it makes sense to reason that every dog has a use for me.

Those Klee Kais are adorable!

I may not require my dogs to work in order to fulfill my life and allow me to live, but my dogs need work in order to fulfill their lives and keep them happy and healthy Dogs in general have a burning desire to want to please and have a purpose in life - they want a job. If someone doesnt give them a job then they will find one on their own, sometimes it is one that isnt very desirable such as alerting the owner of every change in the dog''s environment (AKA barking at everything). Just because you dont need your dog to work doesnt mean he doesnt want a job to do....Even if its as simple as every day putting all the dirty laundry in the hamper and doing other little odd jobs in the house.

I could go on but I am getting way off topic here LOL

OC you couldn't be more correct, I've had jobs for some of my dogs over the years and those dogs tended to be much less destructive and disruptive.

That and when it came time to "work" you could see the dogs almost jumping out of their skin trying to get started it really is an amazing thing to see.

While my rollerblading behind my 2 dogs is a far far far cry from what sled do it still gives them a taste. That and adding weighted backpacks helps as well.

Yeah but I have a pom mix. What job would she have the buring desire to do? Other than play fetch for 2 solid hours, like we do every day.

I got this off the AKC website... I learned something new today!
Quote:
Pomeranian History
The Pomeranian descended from the Spitz family of dogs, the sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland. The breed takes its name from the historical region of Pomerania that makes up the southern coast of the Baltic sea (now present day Germany and Poland), not because it originated there, but because this was most likely where it was bred down to size. In its larger form, the dog served as an able herder of sheep. When it first came to notice in Britain in the middle of the 19th century, some specimens were said to weigh as much as thirty pounds and to resemble the German wolf spitz in size, coat and color.

In 1870 the Kennel Club (England) recognized the so-called spitz dog. In 1888 a Pomeranian named "Marco" was sent from Florence, Italy to become the beloved companion of Queen Victoria of England. Because the Queen was a popular monarch, the breed's popularity grew as well. In fact, the Queen is credited for advocating the trend toward the smaller Poms.

Pomeranians were shown in the United States in the Miscellaneous Class as far back as 1892, but regular classification was not provided until 1900 at New York. In 1911 the American Pomeranian Club held its first specialty show. Early American winners were heavier in bone, larger in ear and usually weighed under six pounds. They had type and good coat texture, although they lacked the profuseness of coat in evidence today.

Diminutive size, docile temper and a vivacious spirit plus sturdiness have made Pomeranians great pets and companions.
The Pomeranian is a member of the family of dogs known unofficially as the "Spitz Group."

The Pomeranian is a descendent of sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland.
So they are considered companion dogs right now, which you could consider that their job, but they once could have been considered sled dogs before they were sized down. I found that interesting!

Can we please get back to the AKK subject. If you want to talk about dogs having jobs, please make a seperate thread.

Cass.

wow wehkah - Thanks for all that information, I would sure have loved to see a big Pom... I think I'll google that later. I appreciate that though.

And OC - It kinda makes me want to get my girl a little wagon to tow her toys around or something!

Cass - sorry, I'm further perpetuating the off-topicness of how this is off-topic but, I couldn't not reply with my gratitude... it would be rude.

Smile

Hi,
I do have an Alaskan Klee Kai. His name is Dakota and will be 5 years old on May 13th. He seriously is the sweetest dog ever. He's really close to me, he never lets me out of his sight, and is seriously a "mama's boy" (LOL). He is also quite a "talker" as I am sure you heard the Klee Kai's are. He also loves my husband like crazy, but has more of a connection with me. I think it's cause I had him before I even met my husband.
Dakota is also extremly smart. I have 2 other dogs and sometimes I watch him try to teach the other dogs things too. My husband and I also have a Siberian Husky and when she was just a puppy Dakota would teach her things, like how to walk down stairs, how to jump off chairs, etc.
Dakota is very protective of his family. He's a little bit shy with strangers, and will cling to me if someone new is over. He is not one to ever run up to someone and have them pet him. He is really shy, but is also a great guard dog. If something is wrong, Dakota's the first to know!
If you have any questions, please let me know. I would love to post pictures, but not sure how since I'm new to Globalpaw!

Hi Christi!
My name is Kim, my mom and I breed/show AKK here in Maryland. We currently have 10 Klee Kai, and 3 other dogs. By any chance did you get your boy from Karen Street?

I'd love to see pictures. If you want to post them in the dog picture section of the board, you have to upload the pictures to photobucket, or tinypic account, and then copy and past the [IMG] code to your post.

Christi, welcome! I'd *love* to see pictures of your baby! Like Kim, I'm curious as to where he came from, too. The name Dakota sounds familiar...do you post on Advocates?

Take care!
