Sharpei/pug mix
Hello to all....my first post....I just wish it were under happier circumstances.... I have a dog that is a sharpei/pug mix....in other words he is known as an oripei.....My cute, and sweet oripei suffered 4 grand mal seizures back to back in the time frame of about an hour...
I've been reading up on the seizures and have come across a scary thing known as Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE) I don't know if this for sure what it is, but it has me scared nonetheless. If anyone out there has been thru this and can give me some advice it would greatly be appreciated..... hugs, and thanks in advance, Paula |

Firstly, welcome to Global Paw.
I know you'll love it here, it's a wonderful community. There is another member here, Pugdawg, who has 3 of the cute lil' guys (pugs) and may know something about PDE. Cass. |

Oooohh I see. Well good.... Sorry I just had to ask, some people don't take them to the vet's right away, they just sit and wonder what it is and not rush them to a doc
.Hmm but I still don't have a clue.... I'm sure someone can help though. |

PDE (Pug Dog Encephalitis) isn't a very common thing, thankfully, although lately I hear of it more. It seems to stick to mostly the younger pugs.. once the pug is over roughly 3 years of age, the chance of it having PDE is dramatically lowered. Important thing.. seizures don't always mean PDE. Seizures can be caused by a variety of things.
My suggestion for some online research and a good place to start.. is please visit www.pugvillage.com A few members have lost their pugs to PDE and so, pugvillage is trying to compile information on this horrible thing. Do a search of the forum there and you'll come up with many posts regarding PDE.. or simply post your concern, and there will be people to help you. Sorry you are going through this rough time. PLEASE post an update about your dog when you find out more about what is going on. |

Update.....He had a seizure this morning and was given a dose of phenobarbital.......he had another seizure this evening (about 12 hours later) so now emergency vet has him on a phenobarb drip. (he has spent the weekend at the emergency vet clinic under a seizure watch)
Emailed a leading vet doc on PED....and have found out that it only affects the pure bred pugs......however learned of another kind of encephalitus that seems to affect toy breeds.....I don't think this is the case with my little guy, but I want to learn all I can. Truly at this point I'm hoping that it's just epilepsy and can be managed with medication... Keep your fingers and toes crossed for my little guy... Thanks Pugmom for the link..... I'll keep you posted on any new developements. |

Update....almost a week tomorrow with no siezures. "Doc" (my little guy's name...yes he is named after the gunslinger) has been on phenobarb the entire time. My SO and I are giving him a "barbie" (as I've now taken to calling them) every 12 hours. So far so good...
He moved out of the emergency vet Monday morning to his regular vet the very same day for testing and observation. So far as his lab work that has come back...no encephalitus....no liver disease or need for a liver shunt....(I'm still educating myself on that particular aspect) ....so chances are it is probably epilepsy.. which can be managed by medication...just which medication is the most pressing point to me right now. The phenobarbital does seem to be working, but it has some interesting side effects...inasmuch that "doc" seems to be stoned out of his gourd, pacing and ravenously hungry for any food he can sniff out. The first night he came home was the worst by far in that he was circling and pacing all night long....(but that could be a result of the drug loading) the next night ...not quite so bad. Hopefully in the days and weeks ahead all will go well. I will keep ya posted Rest assured.... Doc is in good company as far as moms who care.....he has a GSD sister with megaesphagous who was written off by vets, and has managed to come far and do well in the past year....but that's another story for another day. Hugs, and thanks to all who have given support, and advice. Paula |

Thanks for the update & I'm glad the meds are helping Doc.
You may find once his dosage is at the correct level his system will get used to it and the side effects will diminish. A friend's little chi experienced the same reaction for a while and that is what they found. |
