Meliteo Kinidio
So I must be insane lol. My sister is going out of state with her husband and needs someone to watch her three Meliteo Kinidio's. Lol or Small Greek Domesticated Dogs lol. So I agreed to take care of them for the next two weeks. So how its going to work is im going to go and pick them up and bring them to the shop and keep them with me during the day there. Then I will bring them to our home and let them get some play in with my pack. Then they have to go back to my sisters place to sleep.
She and her husband are reputable breeders and Meliteo Kinidio lovers. I beleive they are nonsporting though they resemble spaniels in a way to me. She actually has four but the one she is taking out of state to stud. All four were imported from Greece. Anyways she has two black and tans, one white, and one black muzzled red. We will be watching... Nick- Black and Tan male Adara- white female and Neola- Black muzzled female Lol wish me luck. |

What is the Meliteo Kinidio exactly? Is it a primitive breed, feral dog or new breed?
How are the dogs getting along? Love to see picts of the whole extended pack ![]() |

I really don't know as much about their history as my sister. They are definately not new though. In greece you will often see paintings and sculptures with these dogs in the museums. They were developed to be a companion for women and children. Bred to be sweet and smart. They are extremely popular in Greece.
I don't have any pictures of my sisters dogs right now to share. I am still cameraless . But I will as soon as I can. Until then here are some examples of the breed. I will try and find pictures of some that resemble my sisters dogs also.Black and Tan http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images6/..._Dogjesse2.jpg A nice picture of the general size. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images6/..._Dogjesse3.jpg Here is a cream colored one. Though Adara is completely pure white. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images16...ESTICDOGBo.JPG Black muzzled puppy. Close to Neola's color though she is a deeper red. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images6/...do_Puppy_5.jpg And yup everyone got along fine for the visit . My whole pack loves other dogs so I wasent too worried . |

Beautiful!! How well do they get along with other dogs? Are they incredibly social?
That breed seems to have lots of variation...is that right? The first 2 look like they have short legs and the third looks more like a retriever body. Or are the photos not typical for that breed? Just wondering, cause there is a member here "furrball" that has a rescue who looks like the black and tan. How are their coats? Super soft? Retriever-ish or Collie-ish Bred for women and children? Well I guess all companion dogs kinda are, right? Here is Furrball's thread, check out the photos, maybe you recognize the Meliteo Kinidio. http://www.globalpaw.com/forum/misce...m-curious.html (I'm curious!) |

I simply love them....Had never heard of this breed before but they do resemble the spaniel breed quite a bit. Thanks for sharing and good luck puppy sitting.

[quote=dogs4life;251812]Beautiful!! How well do they get along with other dogs? Are they incredibly social?
They get along great with other dogs and people. They are just softies. My sisters dogs are extremely social every new dog is a new friend. Of course as with any breed im sure if not socialized right some may have some problems. But I have never met a mean Meliteo Kinidio. That breed seems to have lots of variation...is that right? The first 2 look like they have short legs and the third looks more like a retriever body. Or are the photos not typical for that breed? Just wondering, cause there is a member here "furrball" that has a rescue who looks like the black and tan. The first couple pictures of the black and tan are closest to the standard. That dog in those pictures is also just about identical to my sisters dogs body type. And she wants her dogs to meet the exact standard. The breed is so popular in Greece though sometimes they overbred or interbred. Like the tan one in the pictures above could be a mix for all I know or just a badly bred one. How are their coats? Super soft? Retriever-ish or Collie-ish I would call it Collie-ish Bred for women and children? Well I guess all companion dogs kinda are, right? Lol yeah your right Here is Furrball's thread, check out the photos, maybe you recognize the Meliteo Kinidio. http://www.globalpaw.com/forum/misce...m-curious.html (I'm curious!) It could be maybe even a mix. |

I have been searching the net and local pet stores for a Meliteo Kinidio. My husband is Greek and has been wanting one for awhile. I have done research on this breed and have fallen in love with them myself. Does anyone have any information on how to add one to our family? My husband lost his father, Yaya(Grandmother), and Grandfather all in 12 months time in 2007 and I would love to give him some happiness!

SighthoundShowDogs said her sister breeds them. You might want to PM her to see if there are contacts in the states for Meliteo Kinidio, like a club or a breeders network. I would not buy from a petshop, too many risks involved. |

I grew up with 2 german shorthairs, which we breed, 3 yellow labs and 2 black labs. I love dogs, my husband asked me to take a look at this breed and I really fell in love with them. I found a website that gives some back ground to the Meliteo Kinidio and found them very interesting. I am not sure if globalpaw allows links to other websites but you can find this info at dogbreedinfo.com. Thanks for the heads up on the pet shop and I did send a PM to SighthoundShowDogs I am hoping she gets back to me.

Thanks dogs4life here is the link that I have found to give the most info on this breed. I am going to contact my husbands aunt that lives in Kalamata Greece to see if she can give me any further info.
