Hello, I am currently looking for a 2nd dog. I live in Minnesota, we want to either get a jackapoo or a rat terrier/poodle mix. We have to have a poodle mix because of family allergies.

**Mod Edit - Please do not post your email address within your posts, members are welcome to respond to your post or PM you with information. Thanks **

Thank You

Why not get a poodle? Because there is no guarentee that a poodle mix will be hypoallergenic.

I agree. A mixed breed dog may or may not shed, thus, not the best for families with allergies, unless it is a full grown dog and has already proven that it "doesn't" shed. And some people are allergic to dander or even saliva, so it really just depends.
My advice to you would to be to check out www.petfinder.com and do their breed search.
A really good breed selector that can help you find what "hypoallergenic" breeds you might want to consider, is www.k9country.com .

(And beware. Any breeder that is selling these "poo" dogs, are very irrisponsible and you will most likely end up with an unhealthy/shedding dog, not to mention spending big big bucks.)

I would definitely look through www.petfinder.com Search your area and for 'poodle'. Because of the so many irresponsible breeders breeding these dogs, you are sure to find at least one. And if not a mixed, you can always just purchase or adopt a poodle.

Most rescued dogs go to foster homes. Here they may live with cats, older kids, young children, other dogs...etc. From living in these homes and being evaluated, the rescue will be able to tell you whether or not that dog would do well in a home with children.

You also will not have to go through that puppy stage, which can be a real pain in the butt! The joy of owning an older dog!

There are several curly coated, non-shedding breeds that might suit your needs. Please don't go to a breeder for a poodle mix. If you REALLY want a poodle mix, do as everyone said and go to a shelter.

Here are some other non-shedding breeds.

Bichon Frise
Lagotto Romagnolo
Coton de Tulear
Bolognese
Kerry Blue Terriers
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Spanish Water Dog

Hope the links helped. At the very least, you can see that there is no need for people to be breeding poo/doodle mixes because there was already a lot of dogs that filled the 'non-shedding' companion niche a lot more reliably. The thing with pure-breeds as appose to mix breeds (like jackapoo's etc..) is that you're guarenteed to get a non-shedding dog.

Cass.

Hi, I am the proud new owner a sweet little Jackapoo. He may still have a little brother available in Cleveland, Ohio. The brother was a beautiful bright tan and black. On his front, the tan on black was in the shape of a perfect cross. From a distance he looked like he was dressed in formalwear. Very cute. Still interested?

Yes try a rescue for a poodle mix. There are also Malteses they don't shed.

If this pup is a rescue, go for it. However, if it's for sale from a breeder or a pet store, please reconsider. There are already enough poodles and jack russell terriers in the world, we honestly don't need mixes of them. Poodles are great, jacks are great, and I'm sure jackapoos are cute and adorable and wonderful, but they really are only adding to the overpopulation problem, as well encouraging this new trend of breeding pocket-sized dogs with curly hair and cute names. Please, please, please do you research before adding a new puppy to your family. If you want a hypoallergenic dog, get a poodle, curly-coated retriever, irish water spaniel, or something similar - there are plenty of breeds already well-established that can offer you this. If you can't handle a russell because of it's energy, don't get a russell OR a jackapoo, because that jackapoo is just as likely to get a russell's ramunctious attitude as it is to get a poodle's more docile one, and the same for coat type.
