This fuzzy boy has been my love since he was three months old. We adopted him from a shelter and they thought he was a pure bred (____). It is clear from his photos he is NOT a pure bred ANYTHING. For four years now, my husband and I have been trying to guess what he is. I wanna hear what other "dog people" think.
I will tell you he has a double coat, a liver colored nose, pale green/grey eyes, small ears and a fluffy straight(ish) tail. He weighs 100lbs and loves water! At three months: About six months: And two full grown,..over a year: ![]() |

This dog is a Chow/Retriever mix. There is no doubt in my mind about that. I'm guessing that the Retriever part is Golden, but because of the liver colored nose it could be Chesapeak. But I'm more inclined to say that he's a Chow/Golden.

Yes, those eyes look like Chessy eyes to me.
But the coat looks very Golden. But no purple on the tongue, which is something I've seen in every Chow cross I've happened on...Don't think I'm insane, but my first instinct was "Newfie." Are his toes webbed (but that's a Retriever thing, too)? What's the placement of his tail? Is it strong? Does he have any water instincts? What's his gait like? What a handsome guy! |

He does have webbed feet and loves water! No purple on his tongue and the rescue thought he was a pure breed Newfie (Newfoundland)
I would love to hear what everyone thinks. His tail is not at all curled and it is very thick and strong! I am always confused why anyone thinks he is partly chow,...I do not see it,...(other than the bearish face) |

So I'm not insane!
It's hard to say for sure, but I can see how people would think Chow... most Chow mixes I've seen have a kind of flat "shelf" effect to their backs. Gold isn't a standard color for a Newfie... I'm tempted to think Golden Retriever, which would definitely allow for a love of water as well. Does he like land retrieving? Newfies have very strong rescue instincts, so further evidence of that would be that he goes crazy when people are in the water and swims around and near you, follows you out, and tends to stand between you and the water afterward. Anyway, what a sweetie you must have on your hands! I love Newfies! |

Mostly why I said Chow was because of the puppy picture. He looks a lot like a chow there. But is was also the very poofy coat and the bear looking face. But now that you mention it I do see a little bit of Newfy. I'm still inclined to say Golden Retriver.

I think he's a chow chow (not all mixes have to have purple on their tongue! it's just a pigmentation thing after all) and nova scotia duck tolling retriever mix

We are pretty sure there must be Newfoundland in there somewhere. (webbed feet, loves water,..does not retrieve on land,..but wants to save swimmers from drowning! ) |

Oh yes! I see Duck Toller as well. Duck tollers can also have liver coloered noses so that explans that. Are there that many duck tollers running around? I never even heard of the breed until like a year ago.

My first thought was Toller too. Perhaps a Newfie/Toller mix.

Hmm, but Tollers are very small, petite dogs. I think they look more like foxes than dogs
![]() My first guess was Chow/Newfie, but for some reason, he looks an AWFUL like Beethoven! My final guess is Chow/Newfie/Bernard. It's the face...It almost looks Shar Pei! |

Wow! I do agree the duck toller is a dead ringer for my Al. Two questions for those of you who know about this breed, do they have webbed feet? and do they have double coats? Both I have always attributed to Newfies. Also,..I have looked into the Chessys and there is also a similarity I missed before,....light eyes and nose,....hmmmmmm You all are good! Thanks for all your opinions! ![]() |
