I did have the chance to groom a few Chows when I was in school, and I didn't find their coat to be anymore difficult than other double coated breeds (haha, which are all pretty difficult when I thing about it
). I think it's the drying time that can make you go nuts .There was a segment on the animal planet a while back pertaining to Chows. It showed Rosie, a pregnant Chow, and her entire birth process. I think that was when I became really interested in the breed. It was awesome to watch that. Really touching : The owner talked about Rosie's temperament as being "aloof" and "independent". Then I talk to people who have worked with Chows in vet offices, or other areas, and they often talk about their "unpredictable personalities". I think maybe that's what always fascinated me so much about them. Maybe they remind me a little of my kitties :Please do post your Chow pictures. I would love to see them ![]() |

My old dog, Princess, was a chow mix. We think she was mixed with a GSD, but never really knew for sure. She was my b-day present when I turned 10 and was absolutely one of the best dogs we ever had!!! She never exhibited any sort of aggression towards anything...except sticks that is. She was around when my oldest nephew was born and was fine around him. After he was about 2 and was toddling around on his own she was a bit wary of all the poking and whatnot, but she tolerated it just fine.

I've never met a pure bred Chow, but I have met a Chow/Rottie mix and she was a doll. She was my friend's dog who just showed up at their house one day. You could tell she had been abused because she was very skittish and even though it looked like she wanted pet really bad, she would run away if you so much as looked at her.
But then she finally did get the guts up to come over to us. My friend and I were playing out in the snow and she came over and wanted her belly rubbed. She soaked in all of the attention and we were super happy that she had finally broken out of her shell. She had a beautiful black and tan coat; she was like a fuzzy teady bear! And I was there when she got her first toy...she was so happy. But she didn't know what to do with it! She finally realized what it was for and then the joy in her eyes was something else. ![]() But sadly, they did get rid of her...my friend and I still haven't quite gotten over that. Her parents had a church party at their house and just about everybody there said, "She's part Chow?!? Get rid of her, or she'll turn on the kids!" Stupid people...If I had known they were going to get rid of her, I would have taken her...they took her to the shelter and with her personality, I'm hoping she was adopted. But just thinking about her in the shelter thinking that the only people she had trusted betrayed her and dumped her there...it makes me so sad. (And to think...she had been abused but then trusted humans once again, and she was made up off the most "dangerous" breeds in the whole wide world! A Rottie and a Chow! I'm suprised she didn't eat us all when she first saw us! *heavily dripping in sarcasm*) But ya, anyways, I've always thought it would be so neat to own a Chow, and if not a Chow, a Chow mix. I don't think I could handle the Rough Coated Chow, and besides, I like the look of a Smooth coat better. I've heard that the Smooth type is a little bit more outgoing than the Rough type...is this true? Oh, and IMO, if a Chow needs to be groomed, it needs to be groomed, Chow or not. If it has an issue with it, just muzzle it. (That goes for all dogs, not just Chows.) Muzzles were invented for a reason ya know. |

I have a huge soft spot in my heart for Chows after living with a Chow mix. She was amazing, so sweet and so dignified. Everything Sonja said is completely true about them in my experience.
My girl was a bit more expressive than a lot of purebred show Chows are, I think part of it was because of her mix and part because she had a longer, more natural face and more expressive eyes. She didn't have the typical Chow "scowl" and could give signals, though still very subtle, to people when she didn't want them near her. I think it's the facial structure and skin of the show Chow that makes people think they are so unpredictable - I believe they really are giving their subtle warnings, but they are hard to recognize if you don't know the breed. Chows take a lot of getting used to, they're not like your average, happy-go-lucky dog, but they also are not boring or standoffish at all, when they are with their master. (And once again, I 100% agree with Crossfire that while they may like their master's family and friends, their love and devotion lies with one person.) |

I think that as with other 'dangerous' breeds, the dogs need to be evaluated on a dog by dog basis. A lot of us have had wonderful eperiences with chows and other 'dangerous' breeds and a lot of us have had horrible experiences with 'timid' breeds. For example, my chow mix (see above) was by far one of the best dogs we ever had and chows are supposed to be mean and whatnot. But, given my experiences with cocker spaniels who are supposed to be timid (maybe I am not using the right word here, but I think you get where I am going) I have yet to meet a nice one...I always get bit or growled at and they ALWAYS attack whatever dog I am with.
Sure breeds all have specific traits, but I think in the big picture it is unfair to stereotype breeds based on those traits. Not all dogs exhibit all traits associated with their breeds...esp the mixes. |

I can say that I've never had a bad expr. with a chow. We had them for 12yrs and all I have to say is they are a lovely breed. Their coat was a chore but not very much if thats what your use too. We had one female that changed alot of peoples minds about Chows. Her name was Jasmin. She was a gorgeous red female with the sweetest and most, how should I put this, influential dogs we have ever owned(and a great show dog too). She showed people who have heard of the chows so called aggressivness that Chows are like any other breed. Its how the "person" treats them and how they were bred and reared. If their abused they'll be damaged just like any other dog. But if they are very well taken care of and trained properly they are the most loyal, sweetest, easy to train, sleep on the couch with you dog. We have Labs now but our memories of our Chows will never fade, I'm happy to hear another person had the honer of owning(or being owned by such a wonderful breed. I'll scan and post some pictures if I can.

Ok, I scanned the pictures and attached them. I got it wrong, Jasmin was a Cinnimon,. She was dark as a puppy so I get confused alot. She was my moms show dog, she won shows and competed with the top chow in florida and came 2nd. I'm afread I cant find any pictures of her when she was older, we moved from Florida a yr after she passed away. With that moved we lost some things, one being a photo album that had family pictures(ones long gone and our fur kids pictures). When we went to look for the album it was no where to be seen. Thankfully we did manage to scatter a few pictures in our move so we do have a few photo memories. Anyway, Jasmin is the first attachment then the 2nd attachment is Simba. He was a gorgeous cinnimon male that my mom had very high hopes for, he was of great promise. He had lots of potentail but sadly befor turning 1-1/2yrs he was poisened. After Jasmin passed away my mom didnt want to get another. Our love hasnt faded though and never will- they are a wonderful breed , loving, careing, loyal, smart, and wonderful companions.

What beautiful Chows.. Really spectacular looking..
I didn't expect everyone to have so much to say about these beautiful dogs.. I rarely read anything on Chows when I go to dog forums.. I am so happy to know that they do take a special place in people's hearts.. ![]() |
