| Non-Sporting Group Dogs in the Non-Sporting Group do not fit the criteria of the other breed groups, or may no longer perform the tasks they were originally bred for. These dogs all make wonderful family companions. |

time for a standard
Hey everybody!
Im planning to get another dog sometime next year and guess what it is? A STANDARD POODLE! (can u imagine...walking down the street with two "menacing" pit bulls and a "fru fru" poodle! hahahaha I still plan on showing the Amstaff but that will take more money, travel, and time than I am able to give right now. One day... Oh yes, since i really messed up with my last two dog (going with BYB for one and rescued the other) Im going to get my Standard from a show breeder! Anyhow...Im searching for breeders. I've contacted a few. I was really happy with one (who resides in Canada). She does more work (therapy, agility, ect.) than show with her dogs but I loved that she did all the testing on the parents, has a three year guarantee, and has one or two litters a year (different females) but ask no more than three litters from any one female. Two things concerned me though..actually no three things. One, she ships. Two, she seems to have been using only one male as the sire for the pups (doesn't a good breeder search for a male that will compliment their female in an attempt to better the breed). Finally third, which I just found out she doesn't push papers..no contract unless the buyers ask. I just sent her an email asking how she ensures that pet quality dogs will be spayed and neutered and not used for breeding (especially for the creation of designer dogs)? Im waiting for a reply. I emailed another breeder in Nevada and she hasn't planned any litters for winter of next year. She told me she had some available at that time. I want to wait. This last breeder I emailed, she lives in Houston. I hope she will let me meet her dogs in person. I havn't asked about any planned litters. Ok so i thought most show breeders have a pretty decent waiting list and will plan litters a year or two in advancee (which is why I was searching now..my coworker waited 3 yrs for her Great Dane). These breeders so far have planned breedings but they are too soon for me and none have breedings planned so far ahead. What do I do!? Thanks so much for letting me get out this excitment and slight confusion! |

Sounds like you are thinking this through and doing lots of research. I wish you well with your Standard Poodle addition. You'll likely find your poodle to be incredibly smart -- as everyone has already told you. It will be a hoot seeing your walk your threesome.
The only downside is the high maintenance required unless you plan to keep him in a sporting cut. I've never understood how people have the time to groom multiple poodles. |

Thank you
Yea it takes me at least four hours to do a TOY poodle when im at work! I agree how do they find the time to brush them out daily if they keep that long coat on every dog! Beryl, Latte is really pretty! What cut do you normally keep him in? Do you ever change it? I want to do the continental cut for a while (its so rare and ill have that show coat to do it!) I heard the Poodle is very easy to train. (my GOODNESS are my bully's so hard headed...they are a hard breed to train) this will be a nice change..haha! any advise on breeders? what to watch for? |

Hey kcalbat,
I sent you a pm about a breeder I've heard from a friend (who's in Poodles) is absolutely AWESOME. She can't say enough good things about this breeder, and she doesn't even have a dog from her (yet, lol). Anyway, I have no clue if this is anywhere near you, but she's definitely worth a look. |

I like the lamb cut or similar variation -- full legs, short body, smallish puffs on head and tail, and very long ears -- monthly. However, it is not the best for my poodle due to his long body. The puppy cut is better.
Clean Face/feet every two weeks is what I try to do. I bathe him myself every week and comb him and wash his face daily to avoid matts and tear stains, repectively. You appear to be a pro so your new Standard is lucky. ![]() |

I personally can't help you with any breeders and will be on the hunt for a good one myself when the day comes that I want to add another spoo to my home.
I'm sending you a PM with a link where you might find some good leads. You heard right that poodles are very easy to train but I'm going to give you some advance warning: with their intelligence you will find that they'll figure out on their own how to do things that you never thought possible and that in itself will have its good points & its head shaking points! ![]() |

I dearly LOVE the standard poodles. They are beautiful as well as extreamly smart. Before I got the two Yorkies I was really wanting a standard poodle, but in the end we decided on a much smaller dog so we could travel easier with it. Now look what happen.......explosion of little creatures.

i love standard poodles! good luck with your breeder search!
make sure you inquire about addison's disease and that the breeding stock is CERFed. PRA is an issue in the breed. |

Thanks Elegy. I certainly will.
This breed seems so regal and dignified..I'm always completely facinated when a Standard comes in the salon. Tho we do have one who comes in and you would think he was some mighty terrier. He screams and wiggles and jumps and nibbles...and hes around 3 yrs old.. but hes a beautiful dog. We also have this new one that comes in and she is only 5 months old and she is an ANGEL for EVERYTHING! In my search for a good breeder the first thing I check is if they do testing. Then if they show. Finally if I see any parti color , phantom, "teacup or royal", I move on. I am DEFINATELY doing this right this time around. I hope I find the right breeder(they are so hard to come by). Thanks for all the advice. I think Yorkies are absolutely beautiful when they are in full coat. |

partis and phantoms aren't acceptable in the AKC but both are acceptable in the UKC, which imo is just as reputable. i wouldn't necessarily run away *just* because they have parti/phantoms. unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there breeding JUST for that, but there are people who show/title/health test.
have you checked the poodle club of america website for breed clubs and breeder referral in your area? |

We ran into a lady with a 51 lb black Standard Poodle at the vet today. He was 13 years old and going strong. I thought about you.
What color are you looking for? I think phantoms are also beautiful. |

Im want a brown standard poodle! They seem to be hard to come by. The majority of breeders that breed browns, partis, and phantoms that i found so far seem to do it as a trend to make money(though I did see a few who did testing..) thank you for the info, Elegy. I didnt realize UKC recognized those colors. I kind of like the Phantom..but I really want a brown!
I have checked the Poodle Club of American and have found on their an active PCA member(though he is a few states away) who breeds, test, and shows browns. Im waiting for a reply! ...this is harder than i thought it would be! in other news im going to a specialty show in Oct. for the American Staffordshire Terrier! I cant wait! |

I have always wanted a brown spoo too! From what I have heard though is that many of the browns tend to fade out and not retain that rich color. I've been told it is really hard to find one and I have only ever seen 1 brown. Although since I'm not interested in breeding or conformation showing that isn't a make or break for me. Health & temperment is the most important, color is just a bonus.

i totally agree! health and temperament...
though i would really love to boast and strut the continental cut for a few months.. Many of the poorly bred poos that come in the salon do not have the coat consistancy to do so! Thats why im going with a show breeder...to get a poo that looks, acts, and feels like a poodle! I really love the brown. I hope I can find a reputable breeder of browns. Browns tend to fade over generations? |
