Non-Sporting Group Dogs in the Non-Sporting Group do not fit the criteria of the other breed groups, or may no longer perform the tasks they were originally bred for. These dogs all make wonderful family companions.

Boston Terrier

I have been attending dog shows for about five years (I own two champion Cairn Terriers) and have just noticed that the Boston Terrier is listed in the Non-Sporting Group by the AKC. Can anyone explain to me why the Boston Terrier is not listed in the Terrier Group?

They were bred to be a fighting dog in the begining, but they sort of sucked at it so they were then bred down even smaller so they could be bred to be companion dogs.
They were bred down from English Bulldog - English terrier crosses bred to similar crosses. By 1889 there were enough fanciers in the Boston area to found the American Bull Terrier Club, but this name was objected to by both the Bulldog and Bull Terrier fanciers, nor was it acceptable to the AKC. The breed name was therefore changed to its present name, Boston Terrier.
The dogs were officially entered as "Bull Terriers," but became known as Round-headed Bull Terriers, Round Heads, or Boston Round Heads. As the breed's popularity increased, a group of dedicated breeders attempted to stabilize the dogs' appearance and temperament by implementing the first breed standard. Their goal was to strike a balance between dogs of "terrier-type" and those of "bulldog-type."
Terriers were bred to rid property of vermin such as rats. The non sporting share attributes but don't fit into the mold of other dog groups.

I just got a 12 week old Bostion Terrier puppy and though I have vaccuumed every inch of the house he still sniffs all the floors for any little thing to snack on. He does this before and after eating and using the bathroom but it is driving me nuts cause I am constantly fishing out random debri from his mouth. Is this a puppy thing or a terrier thing? How do I get him to stop this habit before it gets worse?

It's a dog thing and it won't get better or worse. Dogs have an amazingly powerful sense of smell and so scent is a huge part of their world. He's basically checking out his new home. Exploring, getting use to the place and, as a bonus (in his eyes) finding cool treasures. LOL Once he's use to the place he'll not sniff quite so much but he'll always do it. Always.
You can use that as part of his play, if you like. To make his day more interesting. Hide treats just for him all over the place and let him seek them out in his daily sniffing. He'll love it.

Oh and, pups should never (NEVER) be left alone unsupervised to explore. If you can't watch him (even for a few moments), put him in his crate or an ex-pen. This is for two reasons...house training and because he might swallow something. And the swallowing random things is both a puppy (more so) and a dog thing...they use their mouths to explore objects since they don't have hands.

Thanks, I needed to know that I didn't bring home the weirdest dog in the bunch. I feel like I have a child and I don't have any children. I felt a little spoiled by my cat because she is so self sufficient. I don't mind putting him in his crate because he likes it there but the other problem is that it is so cold here in Michigan that his paws get too cold before he can go to the bathroom so he goes in his crate because it is warm. He also has a smaller crate downstairs in the living room when we are down there that he can freely go in and out and I recently realized that he was using that as a bathroom also! I'm not sure how to break this habit. When he goes outside he will pee and occasionally when he poops he gets a treat as a reward. I'm just not sure how to discipline him when he goes in the crate. I don't want to hit him with a newspaper because I feel bad. I just tell him NO in a stern voice and he sits down or lays down so it's almost like he knows it's wrong but doesn't care.
On a side note though he knows how to fetch already which is amazing at just 12 weeks old, but the funny part is that no matter who throws his toy he ALWAYS brings it back to me even if I'm upstairs. If I'm not home he just goes and gets it and plays with it himself. My boyfriend thinks this is so strange but I know it's because Brasco is a momma's boy. He also sleeps on his back with all four legs sticking straight up. I don't know if you have ever heard of fainting goats but he sleeps just like that. My boyfriend woke me out of a dead sleep because he thought we had killed the dog already, but no it's just how he sleeps. I'll have to post some pictures when I get some.
Thanks for the information too.
