| Non-Sporting Group Dogs in the Non-Sporting Group do not fit the criteria of the other breed groups, or may no longer perform the tasks they were originally bred for. These dogs all make wonderful family companions. |

A Jindo?
Ok, I was on Petfinder.com and I was looking at all of the different breeds, and one of the breeds was a Jindo. I have never heard of this before. It sorta looks like Shiba or a Cannan(sp?) Dog but I don't know. Has anybody else heard of these?
Here is a picture of some: ![]() These dogs have caught my attention just because I've never heard about them before. I think I might go on dogbreedinfo...... |

Huh, I just looked at a profile for them and they remind me of a 'miniature Akita'. Or at least an Akita in a smaller body temperment wise. But still, any more info would be welcomed about them! I don't know if I'd ever own one, but I'd still like to learn more about them.

It looks a lot like an Akita to me...my neighbors have an Akita and her face shape and everything is very much like that.

Yep, I think on dogbreedinfo.com they said it was related to the Akita.....or it acted like it or something like that....*shrugs* But they are cute dogs! I prefer the Akita to these, but hey, if I ever wanted a really rare dog smaller than an Akita but still looked like them, maybe I'd get one of these. (Don't think that that would ever be the case though.)

I can't say I'm much of an Akita fan, LOL. The neighbor's dog almost bit one of my sisters before. I think her attitude matches her owners' attitudes
. She has some of the grumpiest people owning her. Their grandson was once outside with Suki while I was walking by with one of the girls. Now, they have a 6 foot chainlink fence surrounding their entire yard. The kid grabbed onto the dog's collar, Suki started going crazy trying to get to the fence, and the kid suddenly yells at me, "Careful! My dog'll bite!" Now a few years later, I wish I would've replied, "Yeah, well mine can too [with a little wink added ]." |

I like Akitas. Don't know if I'd ever own one (the Neos are my fav. big breed) but I think they are some of the most beautiful dogs. *sigh* I don't think they'd fit into our family or my 'breed criteria' but I still like them.

I like them OK, but I don't think they'd be my first pick. They are very beautiful dogs though.

Jindo have started popping up in my neighborhood recently - they're a Korean breed, rather than Japanese (like the Akita and Shiba), but they share temperament traits. I haven't had first hand experience but I've been told by those that do that they're not an *easy* breed or first-timer breed, however you want to put it. A few people have suggested that they're more difficult to work with than either Shibas or Akitas, but I can't verify the truth to that statement. (I'm in Shibas and just starting to get into Akitas - all of the Akita breeders laugh when I tell them I have Shibas and say, "You'll be on easy street when you get your Akita! I could *never* have Shibas - they're too difficult!")
The Jindo I have met were well-behaved, friendly (not overly so, of course), and put together nicely. Their owners stressed early socialization, especially with other dogs, which again, is similar to Shibas and Akitas. They're generally not too easy to come by here - the dogs I've met were all imported from Korea, but I wouldn't be surprised if they start getting a little more popular. (Hopefully with people that are experienced with nordic breeds and know what they're doing). I agree - they're beautiful dogs. As for Akitas- you can probably tell I love them. I'm working on getting my first show prospect in 2-4 years, have met and worked with the breeder that prospect will be from, and plan to start my own kennel in the distant future. The temperament of the dogs depends very much on the lines and the owner. The Akitas I'm looking at have *unbelievable* temperaments - friendly with everyone, attention seeking (so different from my Shibas ), bold, and outgoing. As a breed, of course, they're not typically dog friendly - they're fine in dog shows, but I wouldn't suggest shoving two dogs of the same sex face to face in close quarters - it was something I had to be careful of while I was helping out at the Classic recently. It's not a thing that bothered me too much - I'm infatuated with nordic types and it's a common trait. |
