I've heard that they actually stink because of their glands or something. I think they are cute in an ugly sort of way......

I love Shar Pei's great dogs . Get Fuzzy (I'm an addict) by Darbey Conley has a character named Satchel who happens to be a "wrinkle dog" mixed with Lab.

I had a Shar-Pei growing up, unfortunatlly, due to parents divorce, my dad had to give her to animal shelter.

We got her from a VERY replicable breeder, as we had heard alot about medical problems.

She only had her eyes tacked at 8 weeks, or 6 weeks I forget [I was like 10.5]. But she was VERY laid back. She really liked her crate.

I would love get a rescue shar-pei, but I don't have enough room, in my apartment, i'd rather wait until I have a nice back yard that they can play in.

A friend of mine has one. She isn't as wrinkly now as she was as a puppy. They have quite a bit of excess hanging cheeks or lips that hold a lot of saliva. When the cheeks are full they then shake their head and it goes flying everywhere. Not a pretty sight. The only thing that would make them smell bad would be not cleaning the folds of the skin. She takes her dog to the groomer every two weeks, but in between those visits she wipes the folds out each day.

I have two Shar-pei...
Ruga: Fawn, 3 years old
Viva: Red-Fawn, 15 weeks old

As for the breed being stinky, it varies between in each dog. My eldest pei smells like any normal dog, but youngest one has stinky ears.

Ruga has wrinkles on her head & withers..her puppy ones are long gone. She never had her eyes tacked & they are starting to bother her now. Her skin is weak (rips easy) but is healthy..shes not prone to hot spots or infections nor does she need it cleaned daily. She is a total sweetheart..a little reversed with strangers at first & protective of the family. I have been showing her here in Alberta for the last couple years & she got her Canadian championship. In the past year, shes fallen apart conformation wise & a few problems in the pedigree have risen. I'm hoping that in June I can get her spayed & she will continue to work with me in junior handling.

Viva is still a wrinkly, little baby. No skin or health problems. Her ears need cleaning daily, but thats because of her head structure..its fairly common with the tight eared pei. She is a personality plus & loves to greet everyone. I'm hoping she'll turn out to be my next show dog.

Neither of them have slobber problems. The only time they leave a mess is after they have a drink of water.

My dad has 3 Peis:

Biik (19 mts male, cream)
Chocnut (13 mts female, fawn)
Champoy (13 mts female, blue)

Biik doesn't smell, Chocnut smells a little if we don't bathe her often, and Champoy smells even after she bathes. Champoy and Biik have smaller ears so they have to be cleaned often, Chocnut has bigger ears so no problem. The sisters are prone to hot spots especially in summer, the male not really. Temperament-wise they're very easy-going and laid-back (they love sleeping and exercising is a chore) The sisters tend to get into fights with each other but nothing serious. They're very friendly with people and other dogs, but are very good "barkers" when a stranger is at the gate. But no aggression whatsoever. Good with kids. Messy eaters and drinkers, so you have to wipe their faces after a meal. (Unless you want stained clothes ) They have a "soft mouth" (atleast, compared to my PitBulls )

Such cute dogs!! I have a question though. (I was going to ask it last night but our power went out. lol)
I've heard about Miniature Sharpeis. Is this such a dog, or is it a BYB scam? There is a Sharpei up for adoption kinda near us and she is about 20lbs, good weight. (Although it looks like she has mange and she has really really long nails.) They said she was a "miniature". Is this a true size in Sharpeis?

i love my Peis, don't have a problem with smell, i give mine yogurt for the ears, it cuts down on infections, thats the only time their ears might have an odor.
