I rescued a female Syrian hamster about a month ago, that had been housed with males, and has had babies before. I didn't think she was pregnant, but last night I went to feed her and take her out to run in her ball, and I heard tiny squeaks..and to my surprise, there were 6 fully furred babies. They are about 2 weeks old, I cannot believe I didn't hear them before. I don't clean her cage often because its very large, and she is litter trained, so the babes must have been quiet all the times I have taken her out, and fed her. Sexes are not determined yet..but it really doesn't matter since Syrians are solitary. When they are 5 weeks they will all be living in their own cage..I may see how well the girls all get along in one giant cage. It is possible to keep them together, just not likely.
On with the pictures! ![]() The 2 black dominant spots. ![]() The two black bandeds. ![]() All the babies together. ![]() Little black banded ![]() This baby is gorgeous! They are so cute! I love hammies. I plan on getting another one soon. I lost mine a couple months ago she was a golden dominant spot and so cute. She got out of her cage and Gracie found her. This time I will definatly have a more secure cage.

Always room for one more

Those babies are too cute! Should be easier to adopt out because everyone loves the dominant spots.
![]() Syrians are solitary by nature, so it's not even smart to try and make them live together. I've kept hamsters for over 10 years and the only cases I've heard of of Syrians living together they could never show pictures to be sure they WERE Syrians, and about 99% of them were in other countries. One lady on a rat forum keeps a Syrian she describes as retarded (in the literal sense, not as a derogatory term) with another Syrian and they supposedly get along. I don't understand why anyone would put the hamsters at risk to save cage space like that. It's not fair to do that to an animal that's naturally solitary, and I've heard and seen WAY too many cases of dead or injured Syrians that people housed together. And I don't mean to come down hard on you, but as a rescuer other people are watching what you're doing. |

I know they are solitary.. my mom used to breed them when I was younger. I grew up with Syrians. Two of my 4 fosters I had at the beginning of 2006 had lived together their entire life. They died together. I know its not smart, and i probably won't keep them together for very long. (I wasn't going to do it to save cage space..I have plenty of extra cages since I am very involved in rodent rescue..I have a rodent room)
I love the golden dominant spot babies, not just because their appearance but they are just too sweet. They don't want to leave my hand lol. Its very hard to find responsible small animal owners in my town.. most people do not know how to properly care for a hamster, and cram them in tiny cages. I am already on a search for new owners for the babies! If i don't find any, I will keep them..but I would rather not keep them, so I can make room for more fosters. |

So CUTE!
And the momma is very pretty too. I love that picture of the little babe eating. So precious!I prefer Cavies to Hamsters, but I haven't had very good experiences with Hamsters....aside from my to Dwarfs, the only hamsters I have been around have been extreamly skiddish and like they didn't have a noticable personality. I love my two Dwarfs though, and they are quite the characters! |
