Sheltie pups bugies
I loved your picture in the gallery of your parakeets so much. What a beautiful enviornment they get to enjoy! They are so pretty and so much fun, aren't they.
I had them from the time I was a young kid until not that long ago. They are so much fun. I use to be washing dishes and would leave the door to their cage open and they'd fly over and land on my shoulder and walk down my arm and into my cupped hands so they could take a bath/shower. They loved burrowing down in my hands and their soft feathers felt good on my hands. They were very tame. I had so many, one or two at a time, one after the other for years. I miss that. My mother had some pretty china dishes as decoration, hanging on the wall and those birds would use them as a perch and poop on them. Of course, their poop is pretty non messy, as you know. (but others might not and get grossed out.) They also liked landing on and nibbling lamp shades. My folks were pretty tolerant that way, although my Mom was a particular house keeper. She didn't let my love of pets get in the way though. Do your birds do this kind of stuff too? LOL. |

Lol yes! All the time... one morning we "lost" Blue and we found her parched on one of my glass dolls head, it was funny.
Of all my pets, the parakeet's poop is easiest to clean up... when they are outside in our courtyard, I never, ever see their poop and I go out to look for it, just in case (so my parents don't get upset). The worse thing they have done is pecked a whole in our window frame, and that needed to be replaced anyway. They come right up when I open their cage, and are really friendly, I would love to get one from a breeder and not from the pet store, but so far I've had wonderful results from the pet store, so I'm not really upset about that. I clip their wings myself, (I do it just when they start to fly high, I don’t mind them being able to fly a little bit, but I don’t want them to fly out.) and they don’t mind it, I can pet them on the back as well and they seem to like it. I’m getting a new cage soon and hopefully a new parakeet! Thanks.. I would love to hear more about yours, dogs and birds are my favorite animals. (sorry, this is a really really long post) |

I'm not too familiar with the way parakeets are handled when going to a pet store, so I don't know if it compares to the way dogs are. And I don't know either, if the breeding of them is as complicated as far as "health checks" etc....don't know anything about it. So, it may or may not be a bad thing to get them from a pet store. That's always where I got mine.
Yes, I think clipping the wings is a good idea. I lost a couple of birds when someone didn't know they were out of their cage and opened a door. That was awful. Well, more about my birds: My Dad built a breeding box for me to see if two of my parakeets would breed. There was Peterino, a green one and Penelope, a lutino. (yellow with red eyes) But, apparently, because they were so tame to humans, that kept them less interested in eachother so they never bred. But I primarily wanted them as pets anyhow. He made a huge cage for me for my canaries. I had a Kentucky mountain roller with a beautiful song. His name was Petruccio. And a little brown, wild type canary with a little redish on her brest named Phoebe. They make a considerabe more sloppy poop than the parakeets. But I was a "good girl" and took good care of the animals and cleaned their cages religiously every other day. Some of my other birds names were Jamie....had a couple of Jamies and I forget one's real name because my brother would tease me (I hated that) and called one Squaky. I'd get so mad at him for calling him that. LOL. But, yes....they are neat! And that's exciting that you're getting another. Be sure to put up more pictures if you can and especially when you get your new one. I also had tropical fish, several aquariums and loved that hobby until I was married. I'd love another aquarium but am short on space. So, we'll see. Did you ever get into that? They are sure fun and beautiful to watch. But, one more thing to have to clean about once a week. |
