Goodbye Bailey-Boy *sniff*
Thought I'd share some pictures of you in loving memory of one of the greatest horses I ever got the privilidge of working with. His name's Bailey and he's a Thoroughbred/Holsteiner (I think, I forget what the other breed was). He came to us as a bag of skin and bones.
![]() But with lots of good hay and some yummy grain and corn (and a bit of molasses sometimes) he started putting on weight. ![]() Then one day he sneezed and became a gorgeous gelding!!! (Ok not really but he did turn beautiful) ![]() ![]() My all time fav pic of him ![]() We developed a close bond and one day when I was 14 the owner of the ranch (Jean) asked me if I wanted to try jumping him. He was such a wonderful jumper! So powerful and smooth, I loved jumping him more than any other horse although I love to jump horses a lot in general anyways. We started out with a low jump of course as it was his first time that we knew of but it didn't take long for us to raise the bar. (His first jump) ![]() Sadly that winter my Bailey-Boy had a hard time growing a winter coat. His winter coat was always a little thin so we'd keep him in the insulated run-in shed at night (since the stalls in the barn were too small for him) but one night he just wouldn't co-operate so we decided to leave him out with the herd since it wasn't supposed to get that cold anyways. Well it turned out to be a very cold blizzardy night and Bailey had a heartattack and died that night We're still not sure if it was from his age (14-18years which really isn't overly old, but not young either) or the cold but none the less I miss him terribly to this day, two years later. He's the only horse to pass away that I really truly was close with, the 3 other horses I didn't know very well at all though I still do feel a loss for Monty, Hutch, and Bill (they passed away within the last 6years). The huge downfall to rescueing is that many of the horses are old or coming to the end of their peak and turning old so death has to be expected and prepared for but it's never easy. Luckily since I've been at the ranch, we are yet to lose a horse before it has known love and companionshipRIP my precious Bailey-Boy!!! |

What a beautiful boy he was Ren and how proud you must be of how well he turned for the better. No doubt in my mind that you made every day he had just as special as it could possibly be.

Oh, that is so sad. It's amazing how you brought that guy around into a gorgeous horse. I bet the cold didn't kill him. I bet the ematiated state he was in from the previous, abusive owners damaged his heart. But he was lucky to have such a good life with you.
