Help! Just brought my puppy home!
Hi all! I need some help fast! I just brought my new 8 week old puppy home at 7:30 pm. I tried to take her outside into the cold and snow to go potty. Everytime I took her out she either wouldnt move or she would cry the whole time. Will it be better in daylight? Is it the snow? I did shovel a area in the grass with no snow. Is it because this is her first night. I need some advice! Thank you!

8 weeks is so young, you can't expect her to know to potty outside yet. Try to stay out until she does potty and praise praise praise. I know it's cold & hard to stay out for so long, but it's part of doggy parenthood. Also use a key word (mine was always "go potty") to teach her so when you say it eventually she'll know that's what she's out there for. Good luck!

At 8 weeks a puppy doesn't know that they're going to go potty until they're pretty much going
Kelly put it best, just stay out with her until she goes. Typically pups go after a nap, when they first wake up, after eating/drinking or after a round of playing. Maybe try to bring her out every 45 mins, but good that you're getting her off on the right foot so young!![]() |

If your pup is cold you can buy a sweater or coat for her to keep her warm. I know when my pups were that young they stood there and shivered and tucked thier tails. It helped to put a little coat on my little girls so they could sniff around to go potty instead of stand in one spot and shiver and cry for Mama! Your pup also needs a little time to get to know you. This first week is going to be hard for her because she doesn't know what is going on. She misses her Mom and playmates. Just give her tons of love.

Wait till she squats to take her outside. But don't follow my advice too blindly, it may cost your carpet dearly. If you spot her having a pee indoors, take her out, even if it's too late.
Good luck and congatulations! |

Make sure you start the pup on a routine as well. Give your pup specific feeding times, walk times, etc. Take the pup out after eating, sleeping, drinking, and playing. Routines help with potty training your pup. Once you're on a routine, don't quit just because the pup has an accident. You have to STAY CONSISTANT, and keep with that one particular routine, or your pup will only become confused.
If the pup does go potty indoors, NEVER rub their nose in it, or punish them "after the fact". Once they've pee'd... they've pee'd. They don't remember. Punishing them after they've already gone will just teach them to be afraid of you. Even if they "look guilty" it's because they can read your body language and know that his/her human mommy isn't happy. The only time you should punish them is when you CATCH them in the act. But I was going to add in what Barret said. Buying your pup a little sweater or jacket will probably make the pup more comfortable. It'll take time, your pup is young! Just my .02 ![]() |
