Question Watering Eyes

Hello all.

I've got a few questions that deal with Wyatt and that deal with a puppy. So, I apologize if this is in the wrong forum but I didn't want to make multiple threads. Please move if it's wrong!

Anyways, Wyatt, who's now about 14 weeks and a little beagle boy, I've noticed has watery eyes. The left one more than the right one. It's not excessive, but enough to leave a trail of wet hair down his nose. Is it normal for beagle's eyes to water? The only other dog my family has had was Romeo, a fox terrier, who's eyes never seemed to water. If it's normal, what can I use to clean his eyes daily?

Also, I've noticed that sometimes when Wyatt naps beside me he breathes awfully fast. Not all the time, but sometimes its so quick. Normal for puppies?

Lastly, the little pads of his feet are black and pink. I know this is a weird question but is the black a result of him running around and being on his feet all day? Does all the pink go away? For some reason I remember him having more pink on his pads. Also, his little pads are quite dry when I touch them. I know the purpose of pads on his paws are to be strong and protect his feet when he runs and plays, but is it okay to apply lotion to his pads to keep them from being so dry?

Thanks all!

Some dogs do have a bit more of a watery eye than others but no, it is not normal for either eye to water to the point of leaving a tear trail down the face and Wyatt should have his eyes looked at as soon as you have the chance. Sometimes the excessive watering is caused by the lids rolling in ( entropian ) which makes the hair rub across the eye and occasionally the dog's eyelid (s) will grow abnormal hairs, they grow from the oil glands of the lids ( distichia ), they bend inward and rub against the eye as well.

Infections can also do this from time to time and your vet should be able to take a quick look and tell you exactly whats going on.

Puppies do tend to breathe at a quicker rate than adult dogs and when their sleeping, depending on where they are in their sleep ( REM ) you can watch their little chest move pretty rapidly.

The pink will go away as he gets older, there are dogs that continue to have some pink on the pad throughout their lifetime but typically their black once they reach adulthood. His pads should be dry but not cracked to the point of looking like open cuts and as long as they aren't sore and bothering him their fine. Lotion should not be applied to the pads, think of his pads as his shoes, they need to be tough to make is easy for him to walk on whatever comes into his path.

Hi, a puppy beagle, how cute.

We had a beagle for 14 years up until this last fall, she was a real talker, a lap dog, great personality and a very good friend. I will always miss her.

She had runny eyes from a pup on, and I too questioned it. The vet told me it was allergies. And I go, how can a hunting breed have allergies.

But the funny thing here is, you remind me of this, we use to listen to her breathe, and when she would be sniffing something, we often wondered if the noise comes from the inward or outward sniff. Because it is so fast.

She was a happy and healthy dog until her last year, and I use to just wash her face to keep her eyes clean. As long as you have her checked by a vet, I am sure she will be fine.

I think most dogs get dry pads, because they are used on all types of surfaces.

Good luck.

My dachshund, Lucy, has always had watery eyes. We took her to the vet twice for them and they couldn't find anything wrong. She has big eyes that sort of bulge a tiny bit and the vet thinks it's just the air passing over the eye and making them water. We wipe them a few times a day when it gets bad so she doesn't get crusty hair underneath. The vet looked at her eyelids, eye lashes and tear ducts and everything is fine. I would have a vet look at your pups eyes to be sure nothing is wrong. Puppies might have watery eyes when they are teething too. Someone told me it puts pressure on the sinuses and eyes because of swelling? Maybe someone on here will know if this is true or not.

Thanks you guys! Yes, Wyatt is such a cute beagle pup, I love him so much. My favorite is when I let him sleep with me on the bed after his last "out" early in the morning (and I sleep in) and he gets all rolled up in the covers and lays his face right on my shoulder to stare at me till he falls asleep. He's so cute.

I've been monitoring his eyes the past few days. I really think he has a tendency to have watery eyes and nothing's wrong. I've been dabbing them a few times a day. But his eyes don't water excessively or all day long, which makes me think he's okay. He also shows no signs of rubbing his eyes or keeping one closed or anything. They're not red or have gunk in them...just a little water.

I will be taking him to the vet though next week for a check up!
