my puppy is peeing in her crate
My 11 week old puppy is occasionally peeing in her crate overnight. I was told by my vet and trainer that that I should not be waking up and taking her out throughout the night. The puppy is taken out at 11 and does not bark or cry during the night. I know that the crate is just the right size, and we have tried putting bedding in and also without bedding. NOthing works. When we go out to dinner for the night we sometimes come home to her having peed in the crate. What can we do???

What type of puppy is it? I think the unofficial rule for the length of time you can leave a pet alone and not expect it to pee somewhere is an hour for each month old. That said I would not expect your pup to hold it for 6-8 hours while you are sleeping. I would try waking around 3 or 4 hours into your sleep, letting them out, and slowly making it later and later each day. See if this helps, and search here around because I know a lot of other people have had similar problems.

How much water are you allowing the puppy to drink. Usually they recommend pulling the water a short time before bed time.
When our lab was a pup, if there was water around she would drink I think just for play. So you may want to watch the water consumption late at night. And getting up at night for a limited amount of days may help the pup to learn to hold it longer. Mare |

An 11 week old pup should not be expected to hold it through the night. My puppies couldn't hold it throught the night at 6 months of age yet! It depends on each puppy and you have to figure out how long she can hold it. Get her to go potty right before you put her in the crate at night. Then set your alarm for 4 hours and get up and take her potty and put her right back in the crate. If you sleep longer than 8 hours, set your alarm for another 4 hours and let her out again. After a month set the alarm for 5 hours and then 6 hours and so on. You will help train her to hold it longer. I never expected my dogs to hold it through the night though, even as they got older. They only had to be crated until they could wake me up and tell me they had to go out.

By 10 weeks my puppy made it through the night (8hrs) without so much as a peep out of her. The other one I got at 12 weeks and he also slept right through. It all depends on the dog, if it needs to go out, it needs to go out! Dont force something on it thats its not ready to do, each doggy develops at its own pace.
