Sophie was even better last night....Yahoo!!
I got some sleep, it's the disturbed sleep that makes you tired huh? Now she has stopped peeing on the grass and goes on my pavers instead...Oh well, the grass has to dry out sooner or later Today, she goes into her crate to sleep, without any coaching from me. I feel this is a big break through Thanks for all the advice and support on here, it really did stop me from giving up!! Sharon |

wow...great job with Sophie. My clutch is still so crying...tonight he cried (according to my wife) for a good hour after he pottied and pooed. I did something I didn't want to do and that was move him into the garage and also put my 4 yr old pug with him. He doesn't cry (that much) if my pug is with him. I'm wife is getting fid up of the puppy crying waking our 11 month old baby (who is a co-sleeper).

Doing it Wrong?
My toy poo sleeps in his small-sized crate which sits on top of my bed. He shuts up as soon as I'm in bed even if I'm reading, working, watching TV, or whatever.
He wakes up when someone gets up to go to the bathroom. He comes with and does his thing on the potty pad located in the bathroom. My plan is to eliminate the crate on the bed when he gets old enough to find his way to the potty pad himself. He will always sleep in my bed. Is this wrong? |

I am not alone..I was laughing at the "afraid to move for fear it might wake up the puppy" What a bunch of lunatics we all are
Shamous would not go in his crate at all at first. He flipped out really bad. Flinging himself agaist the sides ect. I finally spent an entire day, Giving him treats to just go in. Then giving him treats to go in a sit down. Then when he was almost a sleep I put him in , with some treats and shut the door, and he went to sleep///thank god. Then for a couple of days I would just put him in there at bed time ( he still wouldn't go in during the day). A couple of days ago I had to go to the store and he is in the "I must chew everything stage" so I had to put him in the crate. I stood out side the door of the house for about 5 minutes listening to him freak out and then ...silence.. .He was fine. he didn't have a nervous breakdown, he didn't hurt himself , he wasn't mad at me. Now he will go in when he feels he needs a nap all by himself..yipppeeeeeeee. So I feel your anguish and exhaustion, but don't worry, it will happen. |

I have an 8 week old puppy! and she was a little pill last night, although it was her first night here...she cried in her box(the crate was still drying out) So I put my yorkie in there with her, he didn't care for that he stared at me as if to say "you have GOT to be kidding mom!!" hehe. So finally he jumped back onto the bed, and Sweetie(the baby's name) cried and cried, I tried petting her and everything so finally I thought I would put her on the bed and put her in the box when she fell asleep...well I fell asleep first, hehe, she ended up sleeping on the bed all night long without peeing or pooping on the bed! She actually slept really good! I didn't though! hehe anway, I have heard that if you wrap a little clock that tics loudly in a soft towel, and put it in her crate for her to cuddle, she'll think it is her mama's heart beat, and it is supposed to calm her down! I have not tried it yet, but I think i might do so tonight! and I'll let you know how it goes!!

Oh...I'm just preparing myself for the little ball of terror we will have in two weeks...sleepless nights, here I come! Since my mom wants me to get a good nights sleep, I think she will be the one staying up with the pup at night and listening to it cry in its cage and taking it out even though I don't want her too. I'm going to feel really bad if she has too...it is my job, not her's, but as she pointed out, she can get a nap in the afternoon and I can't.
I think I'm going to have her read this thread because she is already freaked out about having to crate train the dog. This info will probably help her a bunch! (I told her that she would have to come on here sometime and start a support group about cratetraining puppies. lol ) |

I'll tell ya what we do with the puppies... When we get them...We put them in the crate all night long, we don't take them out until about 7 in the morning...because if you leave their potty in there.. they will realize how miserable it is if they do that in their bed! It teaches them not to pee when they eat, or sleep! I know it sounds inhumane, but as long as you don't leave the potty in there too long it won't give them pneumonia! You do have to be careful though leaving potty or something damp, or even just a piece of cloth in their crates b/c they can get pneumonia from the moisture of that stuff, so please be careful when doing that! However, if you feel it is better to take them out whenever they have to potty then that's your thing! Happy crate training!! Puppies are a bundle of joy regardless how hard they are to take care of...(my older puppy had coccidia when we first got her, she had diahrrea all of the time, and we couldn't train her b/c she couldn't hold her poop in!)

This kind of crying can be attributed often to separation anxiety. This anxiety can be broken by ignoring your dog for a few weeks (feed it and take it out of course!). If the crying doesnt stop, bark collars are often needed. NO, they are NOT inhumane no matter what people say. They ARE inhumane if left on more than 8 or 9 hours a day!

Our dog trainer told us to put a sheet over the puppies crate, and when he started crying/whining, to creep up and throw a shoe at the crate. I know it sounds mean, because it scares them, but we only had to do it once, and he has never cried again....he is now 18 months old!

^^ I'm not so sure I'd be throwing a shoe at the crate. It's supposed to be their "safe haven" and I wouldn't want to jeapordize that.
I'm of the opinion that the dog will adjust to the crate in it's own time, and you can't speed that up at all, and with consistancy, they'll get it. ![]() |

I think I'm doing this whole house training thing wrong. I take my puppy of about 8 weeks old, Sara (miniature dachshund), outside when I see her sniffing around but all she does is try to eat the grass or come cuddle up on my feet. What am I doing wrong?
Another question... about crate training... is the only thing you can do about the whining and crying is just to ignore them? There's no other way to teach them not to do that? I live in an apartment and have 3 other neighbors and I worry about her keeping them up. Help me please somebody! Sorry about the length. ![]() |

I just puppy crated my little min pin (who is very ill right now) but after a couple of nights he is ok now. When we first brought Jack home he hated the crate...mostly because he was just on a 6 hour flight in that little thing. But after a while they seem to get used to it. I always say "good crate" or "good boy" whenever he puts a paw in it. Just to let him know that its a safe place for him, and thats where bed is. Also when i just got him, everytime i would take him potty he would cry forever when i put him back in for 15 mins or so...but on the 5th day Jack didn't cry very much...it just takes time and adjustment...good luck
