She Learned to Bark Now

Yep, Abby has discovered her voice. She is 5 months old, and can yip, growl, and barrrk.
I thought it was early for terriorial barking, but she hears a sound and away she goes. She even barks at sounds more than Pella her older sister does.
And she has started a thing when my husband looks at her, she yips at him.
So how do I nip this in the butt. I don't mind the warning bark, or the watch out bark, but this stuff where she barks because it is like she likes to hear herself, is too much.

I don't want her to turn into a yipper. She doesn't know what Shhhhh means. Help, thanks.
Mare

Turn around and walk away when she barks at you. It's just that she has finally found out she can bark like a big girl and is showing you how it's done. If she doesn't get attention for it then it ceases to be fun and she should stop barking at you or your husband.

The same thing happened when my pup turned 4 months. For the longest time he was very quiet, even bragging to our neighbors that he's not loud at all. Well, not the case when he learned that he had a voice LOL. But we wouldnt pay attention to him when he would bark over nothing. He's not as much of a barker as he used to be when he first started to do it, but of course we get the occasional barking when he hears certain sounds.
As long as you dont give him the attention that he wants, I think its just a matter of time before he starts to mellow out a little bit.

Hi Mare!

Don't worry about Abby. The others have given you great advice. I would just not reinforce the behavior.

Mocha is 9 months old now and he is a sweet boy, but when he wants to bark, he sure sounds fierce. I can tell him "shhh" but he will still bark, but he knows when to stop.

Mishka my soon to be 7 year old is a BARKER! But she is a Sheltie...oh dear. I have to tell her to stop barking because I am afraid she is bothering the neighbors.

But with Abby....does she just bark to really just listen to her own voice? Or is something setting her off? Mocha is a talker....he doesn't bark, but rather makes funny little noises....perhaps Abby will mellow out in time. I think she will. She looks so cute!!

Hey Sharona,
Abby I think could turn into a talker, which I would just love. Our beagle was a talker. But it is the long winded barks (I think it might be the terrier in her, that gets me.)
And, yes I think she likes to hear herself bark for now.
So yes, I agree with everyone, I will not give her any extra attention, unless I know she hears a sound or is trying to talk to me.
My husband and her have a totally different relationship, he is more aggressive with her. But she is turning out to be a great little girl. she is 10 lbs now, and I am told that she will probably only grow another 2 lbs and after that it will be just fat added no size or growth.

I just love her picture! Mocha is a talker too...he loves to "roo, roo, roo" whenever I try to get his harness on for his walk. And you should hear him in the morning when he wakes up.....he yawns and yawns....very vocal little pup, but I love him!!
