Potty Training
It's been awhile since I've been here.
Last time I was here I was looking for help in potty training and was told not to let the puppy sleep with me, to have him sleep in his crate. That has worked awesome and I want to thank ya'll for the help....however, he is now 7 months old, does well in his crate all night long, but within the past few days when he is let out to potty he does his business but then comes into the house and in thee minutes or less he is pooping on someone's clothes or on my couch! When he goes out in the morning, I am out there with him so I see him potty.....how does he do it??? Does he hold some in some how and save it for the clothes and or couch? The first day he did this: He went out in the morning before my husband when to work, when I came back in the house one of the kids brought down a shirt and threw it away because he had gone into her bedroom and pooped on it. I put him in his crate for about 2 - 3 hours and then took him back outside to potty....I stayed out there with him and saw him once again potty, let him in and within 30 minutes or less had pooped on a blanket! Once again I put him in his crate for 2 - 3 hours and the took him BACK outside to potty.....he did his business and we came back in. This time he wasn't in the house 3 minutes and he pooped on my couch. I was at my wit ends with him and for the next 2 days he lived in his crate....he ate, drank, and of course slept in there, only came out to go potty and that was it. This morning I decided to let him stay out and excercise some and what does he do but poop on my couch again! I need some serious help with him ![]() He's a full blood pom, and I paid a lot of money for him and really don't want to have to sell him. -Tammie- |

so you're sure that he's going on the couch and that it's not a "cling on" ?
My friend's poms get cling ons all the time (all that fur!) and they bring them into the house if you're not careful. |

Your pup is crate trained but not house trained. He should not be allowed to run loose in the house unless you lead him on a leash, have him tethered to you or you constantly walk behind him every second. This way if he squats, you say loudly ACK, pick him up without any other word, sit him outside then stroke him saying go potty, then wait till he does, then praise like crazy saying good potty, but unless you have time to spend every second with him, then he has to either stay in the crate or a small enclosed room or what I always used, a small area fenced on a floor that isn't carpeted with a doggie fence, and where he can see the kitchen. You can even put a wee-wee pad down if you want to. Mine are wee-wee pad trained as well as letting me know they want outside. Works perfectly here.

I wish it were "cling ons", but they're not.
It's way too much to be that and also I was told when I got him that you have to trim the hair around his back side, I guess to keep that from happening. He's a good dog other than this pooping issue, very smart and listens well. |

CalGal offers some great advice... I'd tether him and keep a close eye on him until you're sure he's trained. This way he's out of his crate but still under your supervision so he can't sneak off and do his business where you don't want it.
Good luck! and let us know how it goes ![]() |
