update on lucy our golden pup & resource guarding & another question..

thanks so much for your advice on previous thread. we are doing exactly what you guys suggested & it totally works- using the higher value item, trading, etc. she is now looking up & dropping the rawhide to see what items we have to exchange & not hoarding like an animal. we are going to keep doing it of course.. now how can we help with the JUMPING UP- can you use treats for that too? like say OFF & then when she gets off give the treat & good girl??? comments? thanks again guys..

Yup that''s exactly what you could do. Or so you don''t get her jumping up looking for treats (if she''s smart enough to figure that out) just ignore her when she''s jumping up (don''t say anything to her or look at her) and as soon as all four paws are on the floor praise her (whether or not you give a treat is up to you, I personally don;t as the attention she is looking for is her reward so it is enough). If she starts jumping up again then ignore once more, Have all your friends, family, and guests do this to and she will quickly understand that so long as all four feet stay on the ground she gets attention but if she jumps up that attention she wants so bad is taken away.

That's good to hear that she's happily giving you things when you ask. Way to go! If she's giving things up promptly 99% of the time, you can start varying the number of times she gives you something where you give her a treat. Be sure she gives first and then you give the treat. (not that you bribe) I never completely phase out the treats, but they can become less frequent because your dog will get into the habit of the "give" game and she won't mind giving you things for some happy praise and a little playfulness instead of a treat each and every time.

OC's advice with the jumping is just what I'd do to.

I went babysitting with my daughter when I was visiting her and they had a Labradoodle, adorable....about a year old. But he was out of control, jumping up repeatedly, so excited and friendly. They hadn't done much with him. When I went inside and he started jumping up, I just turned sideways and ignored him. He kept jumping a few times, but eventually must have wondered..."What gives?" LOL. Then he would sit down and look up at me. At that point, I squatted down to his level and pet him and gave him a little treat from my pocket. We repeated this little ritual a few more times and the rest of the night, he was a perfect gentleman...a really cute personality he had.
